What to Finns think about Poles?

Post by Sukii » Sat May 16, 2015 4:40 pm

For the reason I'm always curious I would like to ask you guys what do Finns think about Poles? Whats general opinion about Poles is? And what's your impression after meeting any Pole is, because in some cases it doesn't meet with stereotypes. How do you view polish women ?

Hope anyone may respond me.

Greetings from Poland :)

Poles are Poles with a broken light bulb - even you replace the bulbs they still require Russian energy to light em up
I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse. I'm gonna grant him all my old underwears that fit his head helping his nose stays in place

Almost all Polish people I've met so far were very nice. To be honest, the same experience applies to almost every nationality. Yeah, I've met some as*holes who happened to be Poles, but they were too few anyway.
In general, I view Polish men as friendly heavy drinkers, and Polish women to be easy.

Overall, I'd say there's generally a positive image in Finland about Polish people as honest hard-working people.
Of course, you need to take the selection bias into account here. We're already picking a sample of Polish people who are more likely to be open/friendly/international.
Every case is unique. You can't measure the result of your application based on arbitrary anecdotes online.

Finland is not England, so there are hardly any polish people on the streets or encountered in working life (serving in shops/restaurants) for much of an opinion. I have not seen any polish shops in Finland or any polish section at the supermarket. People who have been to England in the past 10 years will know what I'm talking about since even small country towns have polish shops and plenty of moms walking their kids to school speaking polish.

I live in Finland and spent many years working with a team based in our Poland office and went there several times and had meetings on a daily basis with them.
Stereotypes - I didn't have any before I started working with them. Nothing negative anyway and I think you'd struggle to define what the "stereotype" is apart from something like "hardworking".

What they were like in reality: they were quite thin skinned and likely to take offence at criticism of their work or documents they created. Rather hilariously one person tried to tell me that what they had written was correct english even though I disagreed (and having spent the first 32 years of my life in England I do have some experience with the english language). I still suspect that the impact of world war 2 had some effect on the Polish - always be self sufficient, don't rely on anybody. A brit would say the outcome of WW2 was the triumph of good over evil but people in Poland would have quite a different impression of it.
I grew a bit tired of this walking on eggshells feeling when working with them, perhaps you have to get to know them extremely well before you can tell your true feelings. I think this is the total opposite of Finland where people will be direct and honest.

Polish women - can be good looking in a german kind of way (this is a complement) although don't spend quite as much on their clothes as the germans. Since Poland is in the EU then a finnish guy would not worry that a possible polish girlfriend is just out for an EU passport.

it seems you are not living in finland yourself?
so it might be interesting to know that a lot of fruit and vegetables come from poland these days, mostly apples and tomatoes, i think. very cheap.

polish woman always makes me think "cat", but that's just me and can't be considered a common stereotype.

Thank you guys for all of your response! I appreciate it! :)

@tuttu, nope I don't live in Finland, even more I have never been to Finland and actually never wonder about Finland till I meet finnish guy, here in Poland. Annnnd nope there was nothing between us, he came as a turist, we had a walk around the city and day after beer in a pub. Afterwords I may say that it was end of our contacts.
Here in Poland I'm a member of Students association that takes care about exchange students, so I do meet a lot of foreigners. Even some Fins were doing their exchange semester here as well, but I was never hanging out this them, don't know why. But after this experience with finnish turist I got slightly interested into finnish culture and started looking for some information. ;)
Think "cat" - what do you mean ? Don't really know if I suppose to read it directly or there is some deeper meaning? ;)

it's some quality i perceive in polish (and other slavic, e.g. czech) women.

btw, i hope you are aware that this forum is aiming at foreigners living in finland (not that finns weren't welcome here)?
so, i'm not actually a finn. and my involvement with slavic people is quite personal.
