Not that it matters anymore but my employer is one the most internationally oriented universities in Finland, so I guess they would probably have a few people there who know about those rules and laws.
Its not about knowing rules and laws, some care some leave it to the state to worry about someone's RP status. In my case I got a reminder from my employer that my RP is going to expire, they were aware of it more than me.

I know a person who was in almost similar case as yours, she applied for Permanent RP after her 4 years RP was expired by 3 months. She didn't even know her RP was expired and No there was no police knocking her door saying she was illegal. She was working normally. But when she realized about it and applied 3 months late, as a punishment she received another 4 years extension of RP instead of Permanent one, but they didn't really ask her if she worked during the RP expire period and so.
Did she used the P-RP application form ? (I think they are different forms ?)

This is an old post so I can tell you that none of those things happened.
And realizing your rp is expired 3 months late is a completely different situation. I got my extension appointment 2 months before the expiration.date. Available appointment slots can be a far as 4 months during summer season and processing times can go as much as 5 months for students who are already here. These numbers are quite ridiculous for a 1 year permit. Police insisted that I should wait for my appointment which was 1 month after my residence permit expiration and sent me away. Anyway, something urgent came up which required me to travel, so I waited all day and they had to take me at the end of all appointments.
