Upgrading Dutch driving license from A1 to A2 [medical certi

Post by Holland » Tue Jun 23, 2015 4:49 pm

Hello,

Made this account couple of months back, but I managed so far using the search function, though I now ran into something rather complicated.
let's list some details:
nationality: Dutch (EU)
valid Dutch driving license: yes, A1, Am, B
Finnish driving license: no
permanent residence permit: yes
age: 20

[warning, ranting ahead] So past months I spent about 14 hours during office hours total, 8 of being completely for nothing, getting my permanent residence permit settled. Now I've finally accomplished that, my next problem arises. I've been wanting to get my A2 motorcycle license, as an upgrade from A1 (you only have to take two hours theory classes and 5 hours riding practice). So I've been to the international driving school Autokoulu Hakaniemi to get it done. They send a letter to the poliisi and got an reply it should be OK for me to do so. So they charged €500 ahead payment which I paid. They told me that if, after my lessons, I have two pass photos made and give it to them, they'll arrange that it's send to the police and my new Finnish driving license will drop in the post after some time for the price of €58. Now I'm almost done with the lessons, but today I read on a website that apparently you also need a medical certificate, and go to the police station (again, ugh) in person.

Throughout the process I had the feeling the international driving school didn't really a good idea of how this actually works, so now I'm afraid there will be a sincere time delay and additional costs for my account to accommodate that. Is there anyone with experience in this field that knows how this works, can conform that either my sources are wrong and the driving school is right, or (what i'm afraid of) I'm right and I'll get entangled in this costly and time consuming process? I started taking lessons here because the €500 was about the same as it would cost in Holland, and it would save me waiting for 4 months until I would get back. But as of now I'm afraid this is gonna cost be a lot more, and not even benefit me time-wise, which kinda hurts the wallet considering my monthly income is about €1000.

thanks in advance for anyone whom is helping, even if futile.

to update,

I've been to the driving school yesterday, and there I discussed it with my instructor. When I attended him to the medical certification matter he thought about it for a sec and he told me I indeed do need to get one. So'll try going by some place in Vantaakatu where I've read on this forum that it costs €30, I hope they'll let me pass today.

Edit: just got a mail from my instructor that he think it's viable to try to send the form without the medical certificate. I think I'm going to try that, since if it passes trough it saves me €30. If not it will likely cost me over month longer before I have my license but I think since my instructor it's worth a try I'll take that gamble, but still I sincerely appreciate any insight from veterans of this particular kind of situation.
