hygienic standars for restaurants

Post by Evaphio » Wed Jun 24, 2015 10:06 am

Hello!
There is one question I would like to ask...

In one of the places where I work (this is a restaurant), they stopped using one-time wipes for cleaning and started using reusable wipes. Which practically means that they have special wipes for tables and special wipes for toilets. After they are used, they are washed in the washing machine and used again.

Toilet wipes really make me curious... the washing machine can not disinfect anything, and a toilet, especially a public one, is a place where any kind of infection is possible.
Moreover, toilet wipes are washed together with table wipes in one washing machine. Sometimes I also see that tables are wiped with toilet wipes that are washed ofc... but I dont think they have been disinfected anyhow and the idea itself is a kind of unpleasant.

I would like to write to the employer and ask to use reusable wipes at least in the toilets. It would be nice to have some kind of hygienic standards for the restaurants, so that I could have a legal ground for asking...

Does anyone know anything of this sort?

It seems a very bad practice to me . Even in our home we use colour codes to prevent mix-ups.
I don't know if the rules are so specific but you could always ask Evira.

Thanks for reply! maybe I will try to find information from Evira

They do have colour codes... It is just that sometimes they forget to use this system properly. And also, I think that as it is a public place..... toilet wipes must be either disinfected or not used again. Mixing what comes from the toilet in one washing machine with kitchen wipes seems unpleasant...

Keeping places clean and hygienic does not mean killing all bacteria, nor is a toilet such a cesspool that would call for some extraordinary measures. As long as they are using proper cleaning agents when wiping the floors and laundry detergent when washing the wipes, I don't see an issue there.

To me it does not sound good.
Toilet is still a place were people defecate or urinate. putting remainings of this together with kitchen wipes in one washing machine seems to me disgusting. I am not sure about how long bacteria or viruses can survive, but the idea of eating from a table wiped with somebody's ex urine is gross

Well, you drink somebody's (and things) ex urine as well. I've no idea what Evira says (OP, please share). Wash at 90 degrees would in my eyes seems to be "disinfected enough" (I am not saying anything about the law). If nothing else I'm sure it is not good for business if the customers get the idea the same cloths wipe the toilet and the tables.
