You can report it to the police. They say take a photograph and information about the bicycle too.

Sorry about it. I don't get why people steal bikes here so much :/.

Google helps with a bunch of questions about dealing with things overseas too. I'd be lost as anything without it!

3 bikes stolen so far. All 3 reported to Poliisi. I haven't seen any of them yet.
Get ready to buy a new bike.
Every case is unique. You can't measure the result of your application based on arbitrary anecdotes online.

If you paid more than your home insurance deductible for the bike and the bike was not in public space, you can file a claim with your home insurance. This requires the police report already suggested. Both can be done online.

In 16 years in finland I have not had my bike stolen. But I lock it every time and not with the "back wheel lock" that most bikes in Finland seem to have. Haven't people realised that with that kind of lock you can steal the bike just by picking it up and walking away with it (or roll it along its front wheel if you are lazy).

I'm glad you haven't had a bike stolen. I hate the experience and I don't wish it for anybody. It looks like you know me very well to know what lock I used, or just you happen to have a crystal ball. In both cases, congratulations!

First bike had a chain and a an abloy lock (chained to a tree); looked like it was cut with a long-arm device. Second bike had a cheapo chain-lock (my fault for not locking it to something bolted to the ground). Last one was a brand new mountain bike and it had a strong U-Lock (locked on a bike rack); cut like butter with what seemed to be an angle grinder from in front of the train station in Vaasa.

In all 3 cases I used good locks. One of them was my fault for not chaining it to something sturdy.

i also got a 2nd hand bike stolen once.
of course you can report it to the police, but don't get your hopes up.
first thing i did even before buying another bike: buy a hard iron/steel lock - something like this (i got it from clas ohlson, cheaper). that was 5 years ago, and i still have it.

there's also other things you can do before the bike gets stolen. like, register it (i think they stamp it in some hidden place).

and use common sense - if you leave your bike overnight, choose where you put it. e.g., not where there's drunk teenagers around...
