How much money can I bring to Finland

Post by Adokas » Fri Jul 24, 2015 1:36 pm

What is the limit? I'm going to open a Finnish bank account, and put my cash money on it. If I send the money to Finnish bank account with my current bank, they'll charge me 40% of the money. So if I send 10.000€, I have to pay 4.000€ to my "lovely" bank.

All EU member states have since 15 June 2007 applied a legislation according to which a person arriving in or departing from European Community territory must notify the customs authority if he or she is carrying a cash amount of 10,000 euros or more. The legislation creates only an obligation to declare and does not prohibit or restrict the importing or exporting of cash as such.
Monitoring the movements of cash aims to uncover funds transported across the external border of the Community for the purpose of money laundering or other criminal activities.
Cash money means, in addition to bank notes and coins, certain other means of payments, such as cheques and negotiable promissory notes. Credit cards do not need to be declared.
You can get declaration forms at border crossing points, or you can fill up and print out a declaration beforehand at Customs’ website. As proof of your identity, enclose a copy of your passport or personal ID with the declaration.
When arriving to Finland from outside the EU, at the point of entry, choose the red Customs channel. When leaving Finland for a country outside the EU, submit a declaration at the customs office at the point of exit.

40%? Hmmm. What's the name of this bank?

Could be export taxes on the money, so the bank wouldn't really be the one to blame.

So is the money taxed or not? I'm not following. I have the same issue as the original poster. I want to transfer over €10,000 from a UK bank to a Finnish bank. Are there any issues?

I highly doubt that there would be issues in UK-Finland transfer. Wasn't there some SEPA stuff that makes these things easy? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_Euro_Payments_Area

No way!! You're telling me that the UK has a different currency than Euro?!!
Next thing you're gonna tell me that they have English as the official language and they're not part of the Schengen zone!

Click on the link and read up a bit. After that, Google "SEPA UK" and see how that works.

I think the chance that you'll be contacted with any questions is extremely small - but even if you are, do you have problems answering them (regarding the source)?

The money is all legitimate. I'm just concerned about being taxed on it when I move the money to a Finnish bank. Does this happen?

Finland does not tax moving your own money from abroad.

one guy told me that when he took cash to bank (around 400€), then they were interested where that money came from. Few times that i have done that, no questions were asked.

Occasionally i make transfers to Estonia, using this SEPA payment and nothing is charged for that.
