Main question- do you have to be a citizen?

If not, what's that process like?

One question if I may, why would you want to go to the military here? I heard a lot of people writing on the internet on how to avoid going there, the other way around is not very common.

None of my business of course but in some cases conscripted service in Finland may lift lift the spectre of service in possibly much nastier military. Military is also a good, in many cases perhaps the only, way to meet Finns from pretty much all walks of life unless you happen to serve in some highly specialized unit.
