Permanent resident and Citizenship

Post by rajangell » Fri Aug 28, 2015 9:46 pm

Hello Everybody:

For some time I have had this question rolling around in my mind, and I believe is important enough to post it here.

What is the difference between being a permanent Resident and a Finnish citizen? Is there any difference between the rights and obligations?

I have heard somewhere that Permanent Residents have a visa that endures 10 years, and after that they have to start over again, is that true or just bogus?

in what case they can terminate Citizenship or a Permanent Resident?

No offense, mate, but this surprises me a lot. You've lived long enough in Finland and you don't know the difference between permanent residence permit and citizenship?!

Citizenship: 99.9% of the time cannot be taken from you. If it happens, you can just get it back by declaration. You can vote. You have to serve in the army if you're younger than 30.
P RP: Can be taken from you if you moved abroad (and some other cases). Can't vote. Can't have passport. Don't have to serve in the army.
Every case is unique. You can't measure the result of your application based on arbitrary anecdotes online.

The biggest difference in rights is voting. The biggest obligation is the duty to defend the country which means conscription for males. There are many other more minor differences.

In Schengen visas mean short term stays for tourism or business. For longer stays it's called a residence permit. Permanent means what the words says == no time limits. It's bogus.

In addition permanent residence can be deported for, for example, certain crimes.

Citizenship terminates when you die. Permanent residence terminates when you move out of Finland (permanently).

As for living in Finland, once you have a "permanent" it is valid "without end date" but the card needs to be renewed every 5 years. If you are naughty, you can be deported (citizens can not). You can vote and be candidate for eduskunta. Some government jobs require citizenship... Oh and if you are male and under 28 you must and if woman you can join the army ( or do civil service) of course with exemptions.

+ moving to other EU countries is simpler if you're a citizen of one of them (like Finland).
