Helsinki: where to buy cross stitch strings?

Post by blackdragone » Mon Jan 07, 2013 10:40 am

Hello. I like to do some cross-stitch one in a while but I do not know where to buy the colored strings here in Helsinki. I tried in Hakaniemihalli, there's a stand at 2nd floor, but they didn't have it. I couldn't find any even in Prisma.
Someone has any idea? Thanks

Paola

You can find them in www.sinooperi.fi and www.Hobbypoint.fi

But they are expensive here, so you are better off ordering them from the UK for instance. It's cheaper.

I don't buy them from here anymore. I get friends to send them from America where they are so cheap (DMC) or I buy them online from the UK.

In Sinooperi they don't have a huge selection. Not really any of the special types. Just basics with a few extras.

I see Hobby Point has a shop in Helsinki, thank you! I normally order strings online as well, but this time I made a small disaster: I used one color, then I needed more of that but I lost its bag... so I don't know the code anymore!! :D I need to go to a shop and check which is the right one with my own eyes :ochesey: .
Thank you very much for the fast replies

Hobby Point is evil! You could spend soooooooooooo much money in there :) LOL. If you're a craft freak like me.

Remember that even if the number / colour is the same as what you had before, if you haven't bought it in the same batch, there can be a slight variation of it. Goodluck finding what you need :)

I like DMC more than Anchor. Anchor seems to be a cheaper quality.

My friend was just looking for crochet yarns. Now I know what to tell her. :) For cross-stitching yarns and kits, she gets them online from noribo but they don't have crotchet yarns.

DMC thread (muliini from the French mouline) is hard to find. It is expensive when you do find it and the shops don't always carry every color. There is a mail order only shop in Hamenlinna that has some colors. (http://www.emmuli.fi/index.php). There is also an excellent shop in Joensuu - http://www.joenlanka.com/ . If you contact them with the color(s) you need, she will work it out for you. They do not have a shopping cart online.

Anchor muliini I can get even in Eura in a tiny lankas shop. Again, most colors, not all. The fabric shop in the same area carries Mayflower thread - something I have not found any conversion charts for that are not in Russian. I believe it to be made in Denmark, but cannot confirm that. It is a little bit stiffer, and with a lot fewer colors. It is better than nothing when it comes to feeding this addiction.

Crochet thread is often called helmilanka, or perle cotton. I have found that virtually everywhere as it is used for doilies and tablecloths. Any yarn shop should have this thread along with any missing hooks. I have seen this in Prisma in Rauma along with Vapaa Valinta.

You are more than welcome to contact me directly for more info. I work on this every day here, so I do have some information that may be of assistance. While I can order from the UK, I try very hard to always support my local shops first. It's a bit of a bother at times, but it is so much better for the local economy to shop here at home.

Hope this helps.

I actually wanted to update this a bit. That tiny shop in Eura closed and so did the online shop Emmuli. We moved to Huittinen. I have a good little fabric shop here with ALL of the DMC colors. It isn't cheap, but it is so very convenient. I will trade for that any day. If I just need a skein or two, I lose any savings when I pay the postage. The fabric shop in Eura got rid of all of their embroidery threads.

If you know exactly what you need, try the online shop at Kirjokas.com. They also have a walk-in store in Oulu. Outstanding service, and they speak English.

For anyone in the future reading this, Menita on Korkeavuorenkatu (Helsinki quite central) has a huge load of cross stitch stuff. I went there today. They have a DMC carousel with I guess all the colours, and Anchor, and maybe another one? And big rolls of Aida and all the rest of it. It's not on their website but they have a whole room of the stuff.

I have to say though, they want €1,50 for a DMC skein. SewAndSew in UK want 65p which is €0,94 and Cross Stitch Heaven (also in UK) only want 40p which is €0,55. So if you are ordering enough to amortise the shipping cost I would just get it from UK or somewhere like that. If I desperately needed a skein I would be straight down to Menita, 'cos it's just around the corner from me!

BTW I am a newbie and I didn't even get my first haul yet. My order from SewAndSew should come soon. Imagine my face when I realised how much cheaper Cross Stitch Heaven was... :(

Anyway I hope that helps, person from the future :)
