Post by saleciahost » Thu Oct 08, 2015 8:03 pm

Hello
Does anyone know the best places to buy produce that is organic and farm fresh/ local/ seasonal produce? Also in particular with eggs and meat I am looking for free range and humane.
Is it possible to buy raw milk?
Thanks so much for your help!

since you completely fail to tell us where you live - essential information when you're looking for local food - i must assume you live in helsinki.

all of it in ruohonjuuri, kamppi. overpriced, of course.

also most supermarkets sell local and/or seasonal food, it's just there amongst the other products.

although, probably not the raw milk.

You can try to find your local REKO-ruokarinki (also called lähiruokapiiri, lähiruokarengas = local food ring). Most of those are on Facebook where you can join (usually closed groups), and/or they list their local market days. For example, in Pori it is every Thursday in the evening at one shop's parking lot. Through the fb site you can contact the farmers/sellers and make an order for the following week. We've found they usually have enough goods to buy even without preordering here.

Most have lots of fresh eggs, fresh vegetables (sadly vege season is almost over), honey & honey products, jams, baked goods, flour, and meats. We've found the best lamb chops & mince here in those Reko-rinki markets. :)

And indeed, as they pointed up above, most shops have organic produce, labeled 'luomu'. And seasonal products usually are marked with the country tag and location.
I've also seen Luomu-maito in bigger markets (organic but not raw).

Here is one link of dairy farms that sell raw milk straight from the farm. You may search for raakamaito, tilamaito, tinkimaito, for more results. This map below says it shows only those farms that have signed up for it, so you may find others by search.

Edit: some K-citymarkets and Prismas, and some smaller shops now apparently also have raw milk available, look for raakamaito. :)

Just remember to inform people drinking it that it is raw milk. News from 2014: http://www.hs.fi/kotimaa/a1398823403539

If you fancy some nice free range eggs, you could try Vaahteramäen MunaEggsPress.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/8274770 ... 7/?fref=ts
I just found out about them, and have not yet tried the stuff, but I've only heard good things about them.
They are selling their eggs from a van (or multiple, I don't know the details) with specific routes and time schedules, e.g. our neighborhood once a month.
You should join their FB group of your region, where you can find the detailed information about their routes, schedules and stops, and make your egg order.

Links to the regional groups and the next available dates (e.g. Helsinki has its own group)

Here are the instructions in Finnish

In case you prefer to buy your eggs from a markes and not from that van, here is a list of stores that sell their eggs.

Didn't it just say that above in clear writing: 'raw milk', 'raakamaito' ? I'm not following why you quoted my post for this?
I don't even drink raakamaito myself, ever (lactose intolerant), just posted that info because they asked and I had recently seen it in the shops. *Edit: or did Upphew direct his post at the OP, so that they'll let their guests/visitors know they are being served raw milk? So I may have misunderstood his reason for quoting me, nvrmd.
And we can just assume people specifically looking for this, are aware of the possible benefits and adverse effects themselves.

Oh yeah, forgot to add this link: http://www.avoinmaaseutu.fi/

It's in Finnish, but has a large & growing link list to local farms, see 'Tilahaku', for a map with locations. Many (although not all) are luomu/organic, and each farm introduction has info about their products, services, and also links to their own websites, fb, twitter etc. Clicking 'suoramyynti' will show the ones selling produce directly from their farms.

I've used this site to locate local lamb farms and luomu-vegetables. Really hard to find good, low-fat, Finnish lamb in the markets sometimes (or it is seasonal or just occasional). My Aussie hubby is quite particular with the quality of his lamb for cooking.. 8) And we both always prefer organic and local produce whenever possible - sadly bananas and peaches, for example, will never be local here in the cold north, but at least they can be organic.
