Another postage question.. about parcel delivery

Post by 332415 » Thu Oct 22, 2015 12:20 am

So I order a lot of things from the internet and have them "delivered" to me. Thing is, posti doesnt deliver them to me any more and I have to complete the last leg of the "delivery" by myself.. from the post office :)

It never used to be like this, I remember a couple of years ago they'd just ring the door bell, I'd answer and get my package. If I wasnt at home, then they'd leave the note and I'd pick it up from the post office.

Has something changed? Can I call them and somehow get it back to how it was (them actually doing the job)?

Huh, I've had some stuff sent to me by my family, and I had to get all things from post - but I was home, and even heard when the postman put the paper notice in the door...they didn't even try to ring the bell. In the tracking system they put that the delivery was attempted, but recipient wasn't at home. My Finnish bf told me that's just the way things are...

Oh, it definitely didnt used to be like this (I'm not sure how long in the past it was though, like I said only a year or two I think).

It's just so annoying and somewhat inconvenient now. Pay for delivery and posti cant even do the delivering..

Maybe it annoys me more being from the UK where that never happened to me. Ever.

It depends on the parcel size and the postal district.
If the parcel doesn't fit in the mailbox they don't even bother to take it with them. Although in the countryside they still offer the service to bring it to your door.

Sometimes the lady who used to deliver our post would bring parcels to the door, which was a pleasant & welcome change from other places I have lived in Finland. Then a couple of years ago we had a change and the new guy never does this. So it seems to be down to the individual postman.

Really? Can you write more about that? How do I get that service?

The problem I have is that my parcel could be at either of 2 post offices(*) both of which are 27km from my home but in opposite directions, and the notification card may not say from where the parcel can be collected. If I guess wrong I have a trip of over 100km to collect a parcel. Doorstep delivery would be more than welcome.

(*) I say post offices in a general way. One is cunningly disguied as an R Kioski and the other as a disused fuel station.

don't you have to pay extra for that though? I live in the countryside and the post is put into a postbox about 50m from my house.

The Nearby Mailbox service enables you to control how Posti delivers your standard delivery. If you have ordered the service, your regular mail will be delivered into a letterbox, a mailbox, or another place that is not your regular mail delivery spot. The service is subject to a charge and you can make an agreement ordering service through the web service or by contacting the Posti Customer Service by phone. The service pricing depends on the selected service and how long a detour the mailman has to make from the regular route. The service is available if the deviation from the regular delivery route is 2 kilometers or less.

I live in the centre of a city, I wonder if that has something to do with it? I don't understand why they used to do it, and then just stopped with no warning. I know it's parcels that don't fit through the door, its a letter if it does :P Obviously I'm not talking about massive things the size of a TV or something, I wouldnt even expect that to be delivered (well I would as it should be courier)

I guess there might be something in this, I think mine stopped coming to the door around the time we got a new postman. I would have thought it shouldnt be his individual choice though in a national company like posti

There is no stamp of the office in question? Imho R-Kioski et al are better for picking up parcels, they don't close as early as proper post offices. I usually order stuff to work as the doorstep delivery is during office hours.

Sometimes (I might even say usually) there is, but not always. I have before now asked the counter staff to show me on the notification card where it says that my parcel is at the other post office. They have just shrugged their shoulders and said it isn't on the card but they can see the parcel location on their computer. I find this is not much consolation if I have just gambled on a trip to the wrong post office

With the proliferation of online shopping, and the assumption that people are usually not home when post is delivered, I can understand why the postman doesn't attempt to deliver parcels anymore. At least in my Helsinki postal district, I know my parcel will be at my local post office, which opens until 7pm. In the UK, it would be at my Royal Mail depot somewhere out of town, and I don't think that opened after 5pm. Delivery to the local post office took an extra day, and of course it cost extra.

We didn't do anything, it just happens. Maybe it is a very nice postman. Sometimes when I don't notice him, he comes in and climbs the stairs to find me. (yes, we have no bell, countryside remember)

Oversize (bigger than letterbox opening) you generally have to collect the same as insured/registered stuff.
Pika post, used to be delivered to the door..however if you don`t live in a flat & the postbox is down the road abit..bad luck these days unless your lucky.

Also kirjatu kirje takes an extra day than it used to.

Worst of all, *here* delivery arrives at about 2pm which is abit ridiculous especially for a business.

Post has gone abit downhill the past few years while the cost creeps up & they waste money on a useless newsletter most days rather than improve the service...
