Building a small cabin without a permit

I recently found this article about a guy named Robin Falck who built a cabin so small it didn't require a permit — http://twistedsifter.com/2013/12/cabin- ... bin-falck/

This got me thinking that I would love to work on a similar project. Probably, not so cool, but at least some sort of a small hut or cabin in the woods. I wonder how do I go about the land? If it's wilderness, who owns it? How do I buy some small plot in the middle of nowhere? Or do I need to buy it in the first place?

Buy or rent. Anything that has fireplace basically needs permission from the county. And you are not allowed to build anywhere you like, so keep your distance from water.

Definitely one cannot build anything anywhere without the permission of the land owner, and as already stated, there are other rules limiting e.g. how close to water one can build. You will need to contact the local officials where you are planning to build, as such there is no general rule that "a small dwelling can be built without a building permit". I wouldn't be surprised if the building in the story would in fact be illegal.

Neither would would I. But most likely it is legal, or he wouldn't advertise it. Checking the zoning rules would be prudent before signing any papers to buy or rent.
