Duo citizenship and visitting home country!

Post by Jacquelineh » Tue Nov 03, 2015 11:21 am

Hi guys,

So I have booked the flight back to my home country in January, and I'm going to stay there for 3 weeks. The thing is Finnish passport's holder is allowed to stay in my country for 15 days only, but since i have duo citizenship I wonder if it is still ok for me to leave with my finnish passport? I read somewhere and it said you can't come with one passport and leave with another one though. Pls advise me, thank u

I am not sure if I understand the question, but the least hassle option would seem to be show the old home country passport to the airline (if they are interested to see that you can stay without a visa) go with Finnish passport through the Schengen exit control and enter your destination again with their passport.

There are no global rules on the matter. What matters is the legislation of the countries on your route. Since you don't tell your home country it's impossible to to comment on their legislation. There are many countries that require you to enter with their passports if you have one. Finland does not care which passport you use as long as you satisfy conditions for entry/exit. On entry this usually means Finnish passport to prove right of residence.

You can show whatever passport to the airlines as long as it satisfies the conditions for entering the destination country and possible transits. For entrance/exit passport controls though you should take into account the laws of that country. To my knowledge, most countries have the law stating that if you are a citizen of that country, you should use that country's passport when entering or leaving that country. Moral of the story; don't confuse airline passport control with the border control, they may have rather different sets of rules.

Depends on the country. Like travelling to US you *must* use your US passport for entry.
Simples: Go with the better one. As in, going to Whereveristan, use that one, coming back, use the Finnish one.

the main question here is: your home country allows dual citizenship?
if yes shows both passports and you will be fine, if not you can have some trouble to back to Finland

Thanks for your information! My country is accepted duo citizenship too but since we are socialist country so the customs are probably pain in the *ss. Just hope they don't make any difficulty to me...
