Irish TEFL Teacher seeking work

Post by KatN » Sun Nov 01, 2015 8:45 pm

Hi!

I just recently arrived in Turku. I am from Ireland and I am looking for work. I am a qualified TEFL teacher my qualification was a distinction. I have received band 3 results from both the TKT: Knowledge about Language exam and the TKT: Young Learners. In my course I gained some teaching experience but I am looking to gain more. I have been looking for places to teach but have had little luck. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I should look?

Is there any where else that tend to hire people with no Finnish language skills? I am open to working in many different fields until I have a better grasp of the Finnish language.

The biggest are Tekmil and AAC global, maybe EF. No idea if they are hiring though. A TEFL cert is not worth much here, even more so if you took an online cert.. If you are thinking of staying permanently, you should consider taking a Finnish teacher training diploma eg from HAMK or Haaga Helia or doing an MA in Tesol (there are some remote courses available from eg Uni of Southampton, Exeter etc). But if you are just looking for a few hours, then try the places I suggested above.

You are competing with Finns who have MA degrees in English philology as well as local teaching qualifications.

I have to say I second the above. I don't know if you are a properly qualified teacher, ie. a degree in English and Pedagogy and you have your TEFL certificate as an "extra". In this case, as already mentioned, you would be competing against locals with a minimum of a Masters, almost nobody here seems to stay at Bachelor level and to be a teacher in a school, a Masters is a must.

If you just have a TEFL cert. I think you will have serious difficulty in finding work.

Also, please don't get me wrong on this, but are you actually Irish? There are quite a few mistakes in your post for a "native speaker", I know they could be typos, and I make them myself quite easily, but just a word of warning, if you are sending out CV's etc., the spelling, punctuation and grammar must be perfect as this is what you are selling...................
