Choosing the best school to study IT

Post by Quyen Duong » Tue Nov 24, 2015 12:47 pm

Hello I'm Quyen,

I'm planning to study Software Engineer (Computer Science/IT) in Finland in the future and I have a question concerning how can I pick the right school to apply. I have used the "Study programs database" search function and have found some suitable studies that I can apply. However there are many of them and I'm wondering if there is any way to tell how schools differ from each other in terms of competence, average grades,... ? After looking at the schools' websites I have noticed that the study programs' descriptions are different but still there is no actual criteria and feature that can be used to compare between schools.
It would be of great help if everyone could provide me with their opinions and suggestions on how to pick a school, how did you do it and are you happy with your choice ? Pros and cons are appreciated
Sorry if I've missed anything :) Thank you in advance !

Kind regards

An important factor is the student housing. In some cities this can be a real problem. And as foreigner you'll have problems getting something on the private market.
(unfortunately I have no info on the present situation)

I went to Haaga-Helia, spent 3 years learning Java. No complaints.

The best schools in Finland do not have Bachelor programs in English. If studying outside Finland is not an option, the best path is to do a Bachelor course in Metropolia and then apply for master studies in one of the real universities like University of Helsinki or Aalto. The master studies may seem far away but to get there you need to plan from the beginning: push yourself at Metropolia beyond what the school demands, get gpa well over 4 in four years or fewer, participate in some major development projects, and take one or two university courses on the side each semester. That will open doors to the master programs (and to much else). Regardless of how good the other universities of applied science may be, none of them has the same reputation as Metropolia when seen from outside. Also be aware that business information technology programs are very light on the technology side no matter what they tell you.

I don't know where are you from but If I was in your position and looking for IT education in foreign land, I'd blindly go to Singapore. Do your research, don't be fooled with just FREE EDUCATION tag. Quality and Modern practices is what matters in IT and those are never free. Think it as your investment for future. lets say you pay 30K dollars for 2 years course, good and proper education would help you earn 45-50k starting in the job. Your investment would be recovered within 2 years.
Every single friend of mine hate working in Singapore, saying that it's a honey trap i.e. good compensation but very stressful working environment.

Here you get about the same income or even more, in a relaxing environment (not sure how long this will last). Of course, that's the case only if you get a job.
