Re: Holistic dentist
I do not believe quackery is allowed here. At least I hope so.

^ well that was uncalled for, as they say.
a dentist can very well be fully schooled and permitted to work and still integrate "holistic"(*) practices into their work.
(*) it is a little foggy, saying it like that.

So they drill the cavity and give enema to keep it from happening again?tuttu wrote:^ well that was uncalled for, as they say.

Re: Holistic dentist
What is it you all think holistic means?
As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.

So far all I have heard is an adjective.FloydFin wrote:You tell us. If you're also on the side defending this nonsense then apparently scientific thinking is losing ground.AldenG wrote:What is it you all think holistic means?
I seem to be the only one NOT prepared to take up arms against one side or another at this point.
Can anyone actually explain what the war will be fought over?
I mean there is knee-jerk and then there is...

You still haven't explsined how "considering the overall picture" and its opposite, however you define that, would apply to dentistry.

Re: Holistic dentist
From that article, it would appear that much of what was once called holistic is now either mainstream or irrelevant.
The amalgam question became moot with the recognition that modern cured-resin fillings are physically stronger, last longer, and are more chemically inert. Plus better-looking and easier to do well. In the US, only elderly dentists are still using amalgam in my metro area. They don't call that holistic vs X, just modern vs antiquated. (I don't know if Finnish dentists have the latest resins yet -- regulated technology in Finland has a history of lagging.)
So I suppose you can still argue about the danger (or lack thereof) of mercury amalgam, but technology has really left that question behind.
Some of the other apparent tenets have also gone mainstream in the US, which (for a change) in dentistry has always remained ahead of Finland. Others like "no root canals" are still on the wacky end.
It still appears to me that you were willing to go to the mattresses for a fight you actually knew nothing about, just based on a buzzword. That's not really different from being virulently "pro" based on a buzzword, only a different personality type. Not particularly scientific in any case.

Re: Holistic dentist
It is known that gum and teeth infections can affect the health of other body parts - eg the heart.
But I don't see how a dentist is going to categorize themselves as 'holistic' if they just KNOW about the importane of a healthy mouth - teeth/gums.
++
Amalgams: As someone who knows something about chemistry - I have always wondered about this subject. Mercury (Hg) and a silver alloy (The silver alloy is typically 40–70% Ag, 0–30% Sn, 2–40% Cu and 0–2% Zn) - the combination of the Hg with the Ag alloy is supposedly controlled so that the Hg molecules are actually cheimcally tied into a lattice.
My wondering has always been that there could easily be a surplus of Hg that does not 'combine' and thus floats around freely.
There is also the possibility of the Hg vaporizing - even from the 'lattice.'
And ther there is the process of removal - which may result in more exposure to Hg than whatever might have taken place during the life of the tooth.
I've discussed with dentists - and frankly - have never gotten any real good answers.
The fact is, though, that these days amalgam has been replaced by 'plastic' composites (which have also given rise to suspicions of toxicity).
BRUSH YOUR TEETH WELL!

an outsider observes:
funny how so many threads start with 2 or 3 persons discussing something, and always seem to end up with 2 latecomers (*) having an endless 1-on-1 argument.
op never came back, neither did the second poster who made that pointless remark in the first place.
(*) and usually, unsurprisingly, those are the forum lurkers with the highest post count.

Re: Holistic dentist
Just a general question - how are you defining 'latecomers?' - all posts on this topic have so far occurred within 4 days (prior to yours).
