Tenant & Electricity Contract?

Post by Samer2010 » Sat Dec 19, 2015 7:45 pm

Hello Forum,

I will be relocating to a new apartment in Helsinki (I don't know Helsinki and I have never lived in it), and my rental agreement states that the tenant is responsible on making his/her own electricity contract. Therefore, Could you guide me how can I make my contact? Do you have any links for providers/packages that I could look at their prices and compare to select whatever suitable?

Thank you !

An apartment? The whole electricity bill won't that much and likely most of it will be from items you can't change. There are other options of course, but I don't see much point in doing long comparison:

I'd like to second Rip's recommendation. HELEN is very easy to deal with; full English pages on their websites to make the contracts, very helpful support line, and decent prices. https://www.helen.fi/en/
Depending on where you live, you'd have to pay both electricity and transmission bills. If you make a contract with HELEN, they'll automatically make a sub-contract for you with a transmission company, and you'll get two bills each payment cycle (typically, each 3 months).

In my apartment, my largest consumers are the fridge, the computer, the oven, and the bathroom heater. My monthly bill is about 11-13 euros (38-40 each 3 months).
Every case is unique. You can't measure the result of your application based on arbitrary anecdotes online.

There are a couple of price comparison sites:

https://www.sahkonkilpailutus.fi/

You don’t typically get big savings except if you have direct electrical heating (as is the case in some rowhouse apartments) or have a detached home with e.g. a geothermal heat pump, AC etc. Or run a farm, or an industrial shop of some kind...

One of the things which can make some kind of a difference is whether to get a regular contract or one which closely follows the wholesale electricity price in the “Nordic Pool” electricity market (so-called pörssisähkö; see here, here, and here as well).

The biggest savings are typically obtainable by metering and limiting your consumption, though. Some things to consider:
  1. Your local electric utility will typically run an online service where you can view records of your hourly (yes, hourly!), daily, monthly, and yearly consumption, and download this data in the CSV format on your computer for further analysis. (By studying this data you can clearly see [in a kind-of-scary-Big-Brother-O-Vision] how much more your household consumes electricity when you’re present and doing things such as switching on lights, cooking, heating up the sauna, using your PC, watching TV etc. compared to the situation where you’re not present, or sleeping, and everything is running in the minimal ”idle” mode.)
  2. There are portable electricity consumption meters you can buy or even borrow from your utility company, to check out which devices consume the most energy in your household and how bad they really, truly are. Some of them come in the form of a power bar, which is pretty neat.
  3. There are also devices which will read the blinking LED on your (utility-provided, fixed) electricity meter, and convert this information into real-time consumption figures, allowing you to gauge the real-time situation in your home on a separate LCD screen... which is also pretty neat. See here for more information (and pictures!)

first of all, it's normal that the tenant takes care of their electricity contract.

i agree that there isn't much sense in comparing prices, if you live in standard housing with "kaukolämpö" heating (pretty much 100% of flats in capital region have that).

i was trying to be clever the last time and chose an alternative (to helen) company, it seemed much cheaper, but then there was some additional fees...
in the end, it's all the same.
