Marijuana legalization barely an issue? Or highly opposed?

Post by dsi11 » Sat Jan 16, 2016 12:37 pm

Just came back from annual visit to West Coast of Canada/USA and it is really amazing in Washington and Oregon that there are retail stores open with hundreds of Cannabis products. Weed, edibles, tinctures, etc. Just show that you're over 21 and you can buy anything you want. The State gov't makes more in tax revenues from weed than from alcohol and drunk driving is down dramatically, at least in Colorado.

(I generally do not drink alcohol, by the way)

No matter how much I smoked, ate, or put liquid drops sublingually (under the tongue), I was always able to function quite normally, though I would never drive on weed (too slow! ) and some of my words got mixed up. I was high every day for 3 weeks and enjoyed it much more than any experience with alcohol.

So I was wondering, is the Finnish population mostly uninterested? Radically opposed? Uninformed? Just too much into alcohol? Or is there a strong movement that could see marijuana legalization in the next 10-20 years?

On a side note, I did get super stoned on my first ever marijuana experience, but that was eating an "extra happy" pizza in Cambodia: eating marijuana is stronger and the effects come with a 1-2 hour lag, so it is easy to overdo it in that way.

Many Finns are quite conservative. The gender neutral marriage law barely passed the parliament. People have tried to gather signatures for a citizen's initiative (kansalaisaloite) but so far it has not reached the 50k signatures required. It will happen but most likely as one of the last Nordic countries.

Most Finns equate weed to heroin. They are "drugs".

True, I have found the same opinions.

Sad, because for such a "highly educated" country, they are really ignorant of the science (safety, benefits) behind marijuana.

Finland is a highly educated country in the sense that a lot of people have done higher education. Beyond that, it's pretty much like any other country of similar economic position.
Every case is unique. You can't measure the result of your application based on arbitrary anecdotes online.

Which benefits?
Evidence supporting use of cannabinoids for medical indications is weak and limited to a small subset of conditions for which their use is legal; moreover, the evidence is inferior to that required by the FDA for other pharmaceuticals.
- See more at: http://www.jwatch.org/na38311/2015/06/2 ... ZnTIf.dpuf
Are there other benefits beyond those and, ofc, getting high once in a while?
The meta-analysis is linked in the article, for the "highly educated" who like to base their opinions in facts, not persuasion. If marijuana was created by a pharma lab it could not even get permission to be used for treatment... Yeah, it's natural, I guess some people also dislike vaccines in their and children bodies because, partially, they're not natural...

Don't get me wrong, I am against punishing the use of marijuana. However, if marijuana was legal we'd be looking at marijuana users in a similar way as we look as tobacco and alcohol users. Not necessarily a bad thing, if done in moderation - most people do drink alcohol and some manage to smoke without getting addicted, but hardly anything glamorous.

If everyone consumed weed like they do alcohol and cigarettes the world would be a much better place.

it could be that there is just no ''weed tradition'' in Finland so you don't have two generations of adults who smoked it so it's taboo.

I don't think that weed is magical herb that could heal everything but in some cases works much better then commercial drugs. (funny how in american English drugs = medication :D )

personally i have a friend who is a breast cancer survivor and for post chemotherapy sickness she tried the prescriptive anti-nause drugs, didn't do !"#¤%, after she switched to weed she didn't lose any weight and could eat more less normaly

i think there's also a problem with availability in finland.
there's not much homegrown, and like with all other imported things, they're more expensive... pills are so much cheaper...

how big is finland on pils?

i remember reading one paper, they were analyzing the waste waters of different towns for drugs metabolites content, basically a pee drug test for the whole town :)

and i remember I was surprised how Turku was using a lot of meth?! Weed, was relatively low usage if I find it again I could maybe upload it if anybody is interested,

for turku, it was i bit old data, newer ones:

http://www.emcdda.europa.eu/topics/pods ... r-analysis

It seems like meth capital of Finland, and third of Europe (per capita) is Savonlinna - Soldiers od Odin are going strong there - coincidence ?

IF there were using more weed they would be maybe more chilled :D

Ok, jokes aside, sorry if I went off topic.
