I'm still a bit confused how buying engagement and wedding rings works in this country. To my knowledge most male Finns also wear an engagement ring, which then also is the wedding ring. It is only taken off before the wedding procedure, the same ring is put on the man's finger during the wedding. Only the woman gets a new wedding ring for the wedding.
So, when you go buy an engagement ring, do you buy them as a set for the woman and yourself? Or do you buy an engagement ring for her, and choose your own engagement/wedding ring as to your liking? So then it would not be normal to have matching wedding rings when you buy her wedding ring much later?
I come from a country where guys don't wear engagement rings, so you only buy the woman an engagement ring. Only later you decide on a matching set of wedding rings together.
Engagement rings
Re: Engagement rings
Many Finnish men I know though had engagement/wedding rings from the time they got engaged. It was explained to me that this ring then is also used for the wedding and continues to be the wedding ring. So it definitely is a thing here. I only did not really understand how and in what order these rings are bought.roger_roger wrote: I have never seen Man wearing engagement ring, its just girly thing. No you don't buy engagement ring for you (in case you are masculine), only your partner (feminine).
For man its just wedding ring and some female tend to wear both engagement and wedding ring at the same time (maybe due to engagement rings are bit fancy and expensive then wedding rings whereas wedding rings are built for daily use and may not have those shiny stones)
I wouldn't call it engagement ring but the ones who are living together without wedlock tend to wear ring in the right hand, even girls.

Yeah, it definitely is a "thing" in Finland.
It is common for couples to get engaged super quickly, then not get married for years. They need to stake a claim on a person, to try and prevent others honing in their man
I swear, even though that is just being silly, it really is true! In all the years I lived there. So many couples got engaged quickly, but not married for ages. And since Finns like to f""k around, I figured it must be an insecurity thing. To get the ring on the man finger quick

Re: Engagement rings
I don't know how old the ring tradition is, but I think it is bit older than that. So what I think still is the typical case, you have quite plain engagement rings for both and then a bit fancier one as a wedding wring for the bride.

Re: Engagement rings
Hi!
I agree with Rip. Most Finnish guys wear only one ring, and that's the engagement ring. I know, because I have been wearing my engagement ring for over 35 years, and of that 32 years married. The engagement rings are usually purchased together, so that they please both parties and they also get a ring with the right size.
Ladies usually wear a wedding ring besides the engagement ring after they get married.
- Some Finnish guys also wear a wedding ring with their engagement ring, but most of us only have one ring.
- - Getting engaged super quickly is never recommended, but if the original rings don't please the couple, it's always ok to "renew the engagement" and just buy new set of rings.

Re: Engagement rings
in my case, I don't wear any engagement or wedding ring at all. She wears wedding ring which I bought it. She hates to wear more than one ring as she hates to feel like Mr. T
Note: We both are not Finns.

So then you would ask the girl to marry you without a ring?Keravalainen wrote:The engagement rings are usually purchased together, so that they please both parties and they also get a ring with the right size.
