Registered Partnership and KELA

Post by MangoPie » Fri Apr 08, 2016 9:02 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm currently a student in Finland from Great Britain. I've been here since August 2014. Shortly after arriving here, I fell in love with a Finn and we are planning on getting a registered partnership. We are a same sex couple and are planning on moving in together. Kela would definitely help with housing expenses, but I'm wondering if I will qualify for it as a registered partnership. I've been reading positive things online, but I like to double check things.

Will my being a student hurt my chances of Kela?

I'm completely new to the idea of Kela, so I applogize in advance for any weird questions. 8)

Kiitos!

It could make them look at the application more closely but you do qualify for Kela in general. Especially since you have been here for a while. Do remember that housing benefits are per household so you might not get anything if your partner can pay the bills.

Actually since you are a student you could get student housing benefits if you are renting. My quick check looked like spousal income would not have an effect there.

Hi. Since you are a student, i would advise to check with Kela office if they are available/situated in your university.

From my experience, they are very helpful and able to provide more accurate answer. However, it might be tricky as your initial reason to Finland is to study and not due to the relationship. My friend (EU citizen) came here for study and felt in love with a Finn, living together as well, and went to apply for Kela. For her case, it got turned down due to her initial reason moving to Finland : to study.

They might have change the rule but i would advise to go to Kela office to get more information. All the best. :)
