I've been looking at compost bins http://www.biolan.fi/biolanshop/1st/htm ... 1&p_id=515
They seem insanely expensive for what is basically a plastic bucket with a lid and a thermometer... Are they worth the price? Anyone know a cheaper alternative? Where's the best place to buy them?
I'm looking for something that is fox, rat, supikoira, crow proof because we'll have it outside the house in Espoo.
Compost bins - Best Buy
Re: Compost bins - Best Buy
more densely populated area, more rules there are (and more likely somebody will complain if you don't follow them).
Re: Compost bins - Best Buy
Turku apparently seems more relaxed than some other places. You don't even need to give notification to the city that you have a such a thin (I did not make that up)

Yeah, we have something like that already and also a plastic one from Lidl but I want a fast composter (like the Biolan ones) that can function all year round and accelerate the compost process to a matter of days rather than months. I don't put animal products in the compost either (I know lots of people do though) but even kitchen waste (veg peelings etc) seems to attract some animals. I want some kind of wheelie bin with a proper lid, that I can leave just outside the kitchen door. The Biolan things are perfect but I just don't get why they are so expensive.Cory wrote:You got all those animals to proof against in Espoo?
We built ours. 2 side-by-sides. 2 squares each with 3 firm sides and the 4th side, along the front, fits into grooves so that it can be lifted for mixing and removal of the ready compost. Easy to design a lid although we haven't bothered. The wooden boxes are sitting up from the ground 5-10 cms and the side allow circulation. One side is the active compost which we add to through the year and the other side is dry leaves, grass, etc which we use to mix into the working compost throughout summer. Works like a charm. We don't add any animal products at all (cheese, meat, bones, etc) so there is not a problem with animals. The odd crow trying to nip at tossed grapes or bananas but nothing that makes a mess. We live in the countryside near Tku and have all sorts of wildlife in and out of our yard.
In Espoo, animals seem to come closer to the house than at the mökki, probably because they are so used to people. I came within 5 metres of two white-tails on a zebra crossing as I walked home from the bus stop one evening last week!
