2 Baking Interns
Hi to the people who did not ask further questions about our internship. 3 hours a day, 3 days a week is not modern slavery and as a matter fact, people contact us constantly asking if we could teach them to learn to bake. We have contacted the Finnish HR people at our accounting firm two years ago when we did an internship program and ask them to look into the guidelines from PAM and the official apprenticeship program that the city offers. We stay ALWAYS within the regulations of this country.
It is irresponsible of some of you to go on our Facebook page because you are either bored or enjoy making companies look bad. We are a company of 5 people, all of whom have worked with us since day one and all who have been promoted and more than compensated.
Thank you for helping us realize that this is a forum of trolls.

What you are looking for is not an intern but a slave. Interns you have to pay. Slaves you only have to feed.Redcloud41 wrote: Compensation: Unpaid. Free meals from Brooklyn Café.

Minimum pay should be around 10e per hour. Even if you are training the person. Disgusting that companies can pretend they are giving skills when they are just trying to steal a person's time. Anyone can learn to bake cookies, it's called googling a recipe and practicing.
By the way, did you know that a CHARITY in Helsinki was not allowed do similar (work experience for vulnerable people without any employment history) because it was considered anti-competitive practice for the other businesses in the area? Emmaus couldn't do it, and you aren't special, you can't do it either.
Please I hope nobody applies for this thieving and selfish business. That's not how internships work in Finland, bosses expect to PAY. And if you take this unpaid work you can ruin your unemployment benefit, your student benefit or even your residence permit conditions.

Seriously , i think if you apply to those Finnish "tech" schools you can by-pass the laws and get some help.Redcloud41 wrote:If you or anyone you know is passionate about baking or learning to bake--
Those guys learning stuff in those schools , half of them will bankrupt a company if not managed properly.
Re: 2 Baking Interns (UNPAID)-Brooklyn Cafe and Brklyn Baker
I don't think this is completely true. One of my kids was a student at Perho (Helsinki Culinary School) and he did plenty of unpaid internships in restaurants all over the city. Now he is studying sales and customer service in Tampere and recently completed another unpaid internship of 7-8 weeks in a store - all of it legal and organised by the schools.leisl wrote: That's not how internships work in Finland, bosses expect to PAY.
In the fine-dining sector, it is not uncommon for interns to pay for the pleasure of working as a "slave" in a gastronomic kitchen.
There is undoubtedly abuse of the system (some of the places where my son worked gave him almost no tuition at all) but - as the OP points out - in this case it is also an opportunity and there are plenty of young people out there with NOTHING to do all day who would maybe enjoy the prospect of some on-the-job training.
I am totally against unpaid internships and zero-hours contracts but unfortunately the current situation is so dire that - IMO - the need to get young people out doing something (learning new skills, meeting people, participating in society) is more important than all the CSR and ethical issues. My son learnt a lot during his internships: bookkeeping, inventory management, customer service, language skills and more. He will probably get some (paid) hours during the summer from the same employer and he has something to put on his CV. It's a sad state of play but the moral high ground doesn't really help anyone, least of all the young employed.

Thanks for your comment! We were trying to attract a board range of people who may even know someone in a tech school. When we tried this before, we actually did a job positing at one of the culinary schools and never heard back from the administrators (even though other restaurants told us how do this). I think maybe because we were communicating in English.

Thanks for your reply and the link! I think some people misread our post (because some troll went on our business Facebook page and said some nasty things). My post clearly states its an internship, that is for the summer (by the way 3 hours/3 days a week...which I didn't think i had to specify as its an internship and of course NOT FULL TIME). I said that we decided to also HIRE them after the internship was over because they were so awesome and they of course were paid. The only time I mentioned FULL TIME in my post is when we HIRED THEM.Upphew wrote:http://www.finlex.fi/data/tes/stes688-T ... ot1404.pdfRedcloud41 wrote:If you or anyone you know is passionate about baking or learning to bake--this may be the right fit for you. Thank you for your comment! Our internship was only doggone 3 days a week, 3 hours per day. But now I certainly don't want to recruit off this forum. I just don't understand the mentality of some people these days as I've been working since a kid and would jump at any opportunity someone gave me to leverage my skills. Can't help to take some of these 'slavery' comments personally as its a business run by me and my sister who go above and beyond for our second family...our staff. The person you're responding to actually had the audacity to post publicly our Facebook page that we were encouraging slavery. So sad. And disgusting.Rosamunda wrote:I don't think this is completely true. Yeah , that doesnt work because half of us are loading these free kids like pack mules.Redcloud41 wrote:cors187 wrote:Seriously , i think if you apply to those Finnish "tech" schools you can by-pass the laws and get some help.Redcloud41 wrote:If you or anyone you know is passionate about baking or learning to bake--

You need to walk in and get the front desk to give you the person in the school who helps manage these programs, and then call them.

I'm not sure how to respond to your post without using anger. But I'll do my absolute best. First of all things, there was NO WHERE in my post where I suggested that any unpaid person would work full time. The only time I mentioned *FULL TIME* is when our interns had done such a great job that we HIRED (that means paid if you don't understand) to become full time. Instead of getting excited for the opportunity to bash a small business because it gives you a temporary audience and temporary power, why don't you consider the consequences of your actions before hitting 'submit.' If I were to complain...no thats too much of an understatement...if I were to accuse a company of being slave pushers, I'd first make sure I did my due diligence and read the ENTIRE post to make sure my argument made any sense. We've already blocked you from our social media pages....continue to harass us on public forums...we will report you to the authorities. Because one thing's for sure....we ALWAYS stay within regulation and our staff will FULLY vouch for us and how we've taken care of them. If you needed a job with us, all you had to do was apply.
