Hello everyone,

I am thinking to buy Daewoo Lacetti 1.8 CDX (as my first car) and wondering if anyone has got anykind of experience with this car or brand or its similar brother Chevrolet?

(Well, why bothers Daewoo? Im just thinking weird! :ochesey: )

I am a new driver and would love to hear your experience and driving hints.

Thank you. :D

Everybody has different opinions about cars, so here is mine.

I would buy neither one. I don't see them as very reliable brands, also in respect to the cold Finnish winter, and as they are not very common brands it might be hard to get cheap spare parts when they need repairs.

Cars I would buy: Volvo, Volkswagen, Toyota.

Yeah, stay away from both.

Especially the crappy American brand.

Do as the other poster said to. It costs a lot for cars there, so if you are going to spend that much money, spend it on something decent, like a Toyota or Volkswagen.

Thank you for your replies.

About the cold weather, I guess all cars here have engine block heater, which is good to all cars in the winter, so is there something else I am missing concerning different car brands here?

A: oh, forget French cars. (Renault, Peugeot etc) they die in Winter. French cars dont like Finnish cold...
B: Do you mean they all dies without and even with engine block heater (engine heater)?

PS: I will have some drive tests and checking and let you guys know tonight. :)

Cars can have a thousand different problems in winter apart from not starting. A Daewoo is a South Korean brand, and they are not known to be good winter cars. Hell, they are not known to be very good cars at all! I would not even buy a new one.

I agree that they are not the best cars, but Peugeot is still a very popular brand in Finland, the 206 and 207 are more or less the standard cars in the Helsinki region. It seems they do ok in winter. I personally don't like the steering too much, and they need a lot of repairs.

Depends on the car and on the temperature. You should still be able to leave the car outside a bit, otherwise you will always completely depend on the power outlets. What use is a car that you can only drive from your home to a heated shopping centre parking lot and back??

I would definitely NEVER buy a 12 year old Daewoo, and never ever for the price of over 2000 Euro! That's plain crazy in my opinion. You see that the owner already took the price down, that does not mean it's a good deal now, it only means nobody was prepared to buy that piece of crap!! It's not worth a 1000 Euro!! I guess you saw 122 horsepower and suddenly got all horny. But the horsepower won't do you any good when the car is falling apart around you. Rather buy a VW or Toyota, you should get something reliable for better money!

South Korea normally has a winter with minus degrees and snow and ice, but on average it's still warmer than a Finnish winter. Apart from that, the quality of these cars is not that good in general, go and ask a mechanic!

The only thing staying away from Chevy or Daewoo is they don't have authorized maintenance place here and Chevy doesn't sell new cars to Finland (at least I've not seen so and not even seen a dealer these days).

Other Korean brands like Hyundai, Ssangyong or Japs Toyota, Mazda, Nissan, Honda are great ones too.
Hi guys. Thanks for your replies.

I ended up with a hopefully non headache Peugeot 206 Roland Garros 1.6. I and the owner paid a little visit at A-Katsastus for Autotohtori. They checked almost everything (except I thought they would open the engine and check the spark plugs or so).

The car is in good condition. Only I have to:
1. Change the oil, spark plugs
2. A/C system needs charge up
3. Also put oil into a so called rear break pressure limiter as it is now paralized rusting under the car. :( (the guy at A kasastus said it is definitely a must to do it as soon as I can. I can still break but, he said, stopping distance longer and harder to break)

Any ideas where I should go? If any of you guys has some time and is willing to help me out, that would be very grateful (and I mean we could go for a lunch and if you have tool to do it for me , then I am willing to pay some labor cost :D )

Cheers.

I paid a visit at Michael's Garage and they changed the oil , oil filter and spark plugs, oiling the break pressure limiter for a decent price €159.88 while Motonet garage I asked earlier, would charge about €250.

Meanwhile, I was freaking out how the car is eating quite much fuel, compared to the advertisement of average 6.3l/100km from seller and 7l/100km from online. About 3 days running about 256 km and it eats up almost 25l, which is half the tank.
This will need to be confirmed though by perhaps go ask Peugeot Huolto. ( The guy at Michael garage said, Peugeot cars model from 2001 back, they eat more fuel compared to some model 2005 onwards, anyone any ideas? )

The thing is, I have my suspection while all the guys from A kasastus, Autotohtori, Michael's Garage seem confident that its quite normal. :?

So about 10l/100km. Where are you driving? If in city, then that number would be in the right ball park imho. I just went and checked what my car's computer said. 6,8l/100km since I got the car. 7,3 since last refill and 11,0 the last stint from home to work. volkswagen.fi says the number should be 4,8 or at least 6,0 if all the driving would be in city... ;)
