HSL penalty fee impact on me

Post by Geoge.carman » Sun May 15, 2016 8:20 pm

Today, I forgot my wallet at home, and in a hurry to take the N train to city center, the train just arrive when I was in Malmi station, so I jumped into the train, and started to purchase my ticket with my mobile phone by using HSL mobile app.

Unfortunately, I encountered a bad network connection that I tried multiple times but failed to do the ticket purchase, at the same time, a man in blue come to me ask for my ticket, I couldn't provide, and explained to him what has been happening, but he said it is my own risk & gave me a 80E penalty fee.

I admit that it is my fault, I should have a valid ticket before I jump to the train, but mistake has already been made, I accept this penalty fare & paid it immediately after I was back home.

Here is what I am concerning & want to ask: I'm not sure is it a rumor or not, I heard from some people that in Finland, if I got this kind of penalty fare, it means I got a "dirty spot" on my personal credit in this country & it will stick with me permanently. It will affect me in many things, e.g. when I apply a job, the employer might check your personal credit in this society, and they will find out that I have had this penalty fare when taking a train, and they might reject my job application because of that. It might also affect when I apply for a loan from bank, etc.

Are these sayings correct? Am I now in the list of untrustworthy people in Finland? and it will be with me forever? I am really afraid of this thing. Please give some advice or clarification on it. Thanks in advance.

Number one, calm down.

You did wrong, you paid the ticket.

If it affected your ability to get a job, a lot of people would be unemployable :D

Take a chill pill. It won't do anything. I think it only will, if you didn't pay the fine.

But is there a record in some system that it sticks with me forever? I am not only concerning the impact of job seeking, but in general, what are the possible/potential impact ?

Like Flossy said, no impact at all. The only possible problems might arise if you didn't pay. Paid fines don't enter your credit history.
Also, credit history isn't permanent. I believe a mark only lasts two years.
Every case is unique. You can't measure the result of your application based on arbitrary anecdotes online.

Yeah, smurf fees, parking tickets etc. have no effect, unless you don't pay and then you get into collection. Then you are in doodah.

It depends. Two years if you pay and notify. However, for example a bankruptcy could stay for five years.
