Oh no Brexit!

Now?
Nothing for several years at least, if ever.

As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.

You will be citizen of a 3rd world country like the US who will need a residence permit instead of the free movement.bm50 wrote:Brexit! What will happen to us poor Brits in Finland now?
No more luxury EU treatment.
And as Alden said it will take a couple of years.

Re: Oh no Brexit!
Since when has the US and UK ever been a third world country? You compare them to African countries? The UK has the 5th largest economy in the world! Compared to that I would say Finland is a third world country!rinso wrote:You will be citizen of a 3rd world country like the US who will need a residence permit instead of the free movement.bm50 wrote:Brexit! Re: Oh no Brexit!
There aren't too many UK citizens here on the streets or circling the country making their living by begging or theft. Most of them have decent reason under which a residence permit wouldn't have been that much harder to get than a registration.rinso wrote:You will be citizen of a 3rd world country like the US who will need a residence permit instead of the free movement.
US of course is pretty young. UK/England? Before time of Julius Caesar or so perhaps?bm50 wrote: Since when has the US and UK ever been a third world country?
As I stated in the other thread, I see no reason to believe that those UK citizens living under a permanent status would not their get their residency rights swapped to pretty much equivalent residence permit. Those that have learnt the language sufficiently or think they'd be able now of course have a clearer reason to pick the second nationality.
Re: Oh no Brexit!
I think you must be crazy! We lost our fishing industry because of the EU just ask a British fisherman! No we have own fish and potatoes for our good fish and chips thank you! Obvious you are not British and never been there all our coastal towns have fresh locally caught fresh fish and we still have farms you know that grow fresh vegetables! You must live in a fantasy world! GB does not need the EU but they need GB as we are their biggest customerroger_roger wrote:Not for very long now... Africans are not slave anymore, so no more stealing Diamond, Gold, Coil, Steel, Oil and free labour. Indians, Ozzies and Canadians don't give a sh.it about queen anymore. Go back to your fishing days? ha, you've even lost those skills long ago and been importing fish from Norway and Potato from Spain for fish and chips. When the Scots and Irish shows middle finger, you are nothing more than 3rd world soon.bm50 wrote:Since when has the US and UK ever been a third world country? You compare them to African countries? Re: Oh no Brexit!
My take on the fishing industry is that the EU quotas actually saved European stocks from imminent demise. Otherwise, it would have been game over a long time ago. Indeed, it is rather worrying that UK fishermen will now stick up a middle finger to EU quotas adversely affecting the fragile balance. We lost our fishing industry because of the EU
The reason the UK is a "big customer" for other EU countries is that it needs large quantities of cheap food that it cannot produce itself. The UK imports almost£9bn of fruit and veg. Overall 27% of food consumed in the UK comes from the EU (and approx 54% is homegrown).
UK food exports amount to £0.9bn of which 70% goes to the EU.
Some numbers here:

The problem with importing food from the Commonwealth - lamb from NZ etc - is that all those countries are so far away. So much for eating local. It is not really a sustainable model.

Not anymore. Overtaken by France this week.bm50 wrote:Since when has the US and UK ever been a third world country? This is my understanding too. The ones complaining that they can't fish more of their own stock will now merrily destroy their own industries through over-fishing, without the EU's interference.Rosamunda wrote:My take on the fishing industry is that the EU quotas actually saved European stocks from imminent demise. We lost our fishing industry because of the EU
Like so many things in the UK, actual knowledge of environmental issues is looked down on with disdain by a lot of people. It is the same phenomenon that led so many people to outright reject the view of many, many experts warning that the UK would suffer terrible financial losses by leaving. The "we don't like experts" thing. I don't know if it's jealousy of the education levels of the haves vs the have-nots, or just a cultural habit.
Re: Oh no Brexit!
*sigh* rinso's intention is '3rd country'. It's a term used for countries that aren't EU/EEA countries. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_country_nationalbm50 wrote:Since when has the US and UK ever been a third world country? It's a simple wordplay joke by rinso. It's actually quite funny.
Every case is unique. You can't measure the result of your application based on arbitrary anecdotes online.
Re: Oh no Brexit!
On the practical side: how should a Brit act to secure permanent residency now?
Before, you just came to Finland, registered on with the police and moved into your place.
What now?

Re: Oh no Brexit!
You can't really tell at this point. If UK negotiates a similar deal as Norway, Iceland and Switzerland have then nothing really would need to change (citizens of those countries are handled by the same parts of the Finnish Aliens Act than actual EU citizens)Meresjeva wrote:On the practical side: how should a Brit act to secure permanent residency now?

If not, my assumption would be that the permanent status for those that have been here 4+ years would be given by specific legislation, based on mutual deal to agreed by UK and the other member states. Those that recently arrived here would probably get regular A or B permit that would need to be extended like citizens of other non-EU/EEA countries would need to. But for all of this there actually has to be some agreement between UK and EU member states.
One of course can also apply for citizenship. The terms of it won't change, the benefits from it for UK citizens would be significantly increased if UK stops being a EU/EEA country.
