Finnish ID Number and Tax Consequences

Post by Deckhand » Tue Jul 12, 2016 12:07 pm

I'm about to renew my Finnish residence permit again and I wonder whether obtaining a Finnish ID number would have any consequences in terms of attention from tax authorities.

I spend less than 183 days a year here and am paid by a foreign employer with no permanent establishment in Finland, so I am not required to pay taxes in Finland, but I'm wondering if having obtained an ID number, whether I will have to prove that over and over again.

Having an ID number might be useful for obtaining mobile phone subscriptions, bank accounts, etc.

Anyone have any practical experience or specific knowledge?

You are required to pay taxes if you are a leased employee:

Getting an ID number puts you to the population register. You would record your address there as your foreign address which should mean that Vero is not overly interested in you (they will not for example automatically send you yearly tax proposals).

Since you need to keep a permanent foreign address in the population information system, I don't know how willing they are to give you these. You can record a temporary Finnish address (once in the system for stays over three months you must do so).

Finnish ID by itself does not create tax payment responsibility . I had one for many years before moving to Finland due to having property in Finland. But it does not mean that I have to pay my income tax here. Taxes are levied on the basis of residency , obviously you are not a resident and yoy are not a leased employee either . No worries , mate

Yes , it is possible, but usually in such a case you get another one year RP
