Advice from active/hobby gardeners

Post by winsum » Mon Aug 01, 2016 4:37 pm

Hi, I need some good advice as my really small rivitalo garden seems to be turning into a disaster. Grass is no longer grass but some weird soft grassy floor along with dozens of other kind of fast growing weeds. It seems like it happened all in a year or two. I often mow the lawn and cut the border hedges (common ones with some berries) every once in a while. Weeds are hard to take out from roots so last year disaster started when I used Round up weed killer gel. I have a feeling that first it dried some of the weeds but then ignited others in a way that they started to grow very quickly and everywhere. Plus a huge anthill appeared in the middle of the lawn where I dropped some poison liquid with water mixture (bought from prisma). Ants were gone but the whole area was spoiled.

Now this year I see two more advancements, termites eating wooden floor... and weirdly border hedges' roots are growing underneath the lawn and started popping up around 2-3 ft inside the lawn. I thought they were weeds, when I tried to take 'em out, the roots led all the way to the border hedges. Strange.

I'm not good with gardening so any advice/suggestion of how to deal this situation would be much appreciated. Is it fine to throw grass seeds everywhere in current situation or is there need to fix the lawn from scratch taking out old grass and grow new seeds?

Thanks!

Either you made some dark wizard angry or your making your story too fancy. There are no termites in Finland.

Weeds won't kill you but RoundUp will. It is about to be banned in Europe - as soon as ECHA can get its act together and publish its findings.

My suggestion...

Hedges have a tendency to spread roots and they will dry out your lawn. If you keep your grass cut short, you won't notice the roots or the weeds - just green. Weeds are fine. You won't get rid of them.

Buy some regular garden earth (puutarhamulta or similar) and rake it over the existing lawn before you re-seed. If your lawn is in the shade ask for special grass seed for shady lawns. If you have kids who play on the lawn, ask for special heavy-duty grass seed (usually a football on the bag). Once you seed you need to keep off it for several weeks and it needs to be watered.

And don't use RoundUp - please.

Funny I was preparing to order Roundup gel again online. Thanks for the suggestion Rosamunda. I find it hard to believe if problem will be resolved by putting just new soil and seeds without getting rid of whats already there. I see people in my neighbourhood, mostly elderly, sitting in their lawns taking out weed 'from the root' one by one with proper tools and they spend a lot of time. No wonder grass looks greener other side of the fence :D

Here is an image of ants/termites damaging the wooden floor of the yard. God knows what these are but they are gone with the continuous rain or just hiding. Also I dropped ants poison just in case.
