I am an American that has been living in Finland now for 5 and half years. I submitted an application for permanent residence before my 4 year permit expired. This is my third time applying for residency in the 5 years living here (First for 1 year, second for 4 years) This was the only residence I was allowed to apply for (permanent). I have been through a divorce of which my 4 year permit was based on marriage. I have been to the police station once in Turku (immigration) and one in Uusikaupunki and both receptionist said I did not need to re-apply until my current permit expired and I told them my current residence permit was based on family ties (marriage) and that we have divorced. I have also had a child with my ex-wife and she has sole custody over her. I also have a son from another relationship whom I have half custody over. I have committed 0 crimes in Finland in the 5 years I have resided here. I got a letter in the mail today stating that have reached a verdict. The only issue I am worried about is that I do have debt problems in Finland that I can not seem to pay off on top of medical issues etc. Could this effect the outcome of the verdict to refuse me a permanent residence? I filled my new application based on the fact that I have children in Finland. I would feel that Finland always have the best interest in children and would look at that aspect on top of other issues.
Kind of stressed out at the moment before I possibly head to Raisio tommorow and find the verdict. Any relief or stories of similar circumstances would sure take the weight off my shoulders! Please tell me that I am just over thinking this matter and should be proud and happy to get my permanent residency
