Where do you normally store heavy pram?

Post by drapadubok » Mon Aug 22, 2016 5:53 pm

Hi all and thank you in advance for the answer.

The question is simple: assuming you live on a 3-4th floor of an average Finnish house with no elevator, where would you store a baby pram?

Carrying it upstairs is not an option - the pram is too heavy for a single person to carry it up. The bicycle storage on the other hand is full of bikes, there is literally no space for a pram there. Finally, storing pram on the staircase (even if there is space) - is prohibited by the law.

This is a dilemma for me and my wife, as we are looking for a new apartment, and majority that we can afford has no elevator and is on one of the higher floors. I'm assuming that we are missing some simple detail.
Any advice or idea is welcome!

Most of them have space near the main door where a pram can be left, even if it's not a special pram space. Both my flat and my in-laws' flats have prams sitting there and there have never been complaints or signs put up telling people to move them away.

Oh and by the way: I'd go for a place with an elevator, even if this means compromising the quality of the kitchen/bathroom/etc, or a less-awesome location. You will only carry a baby/toddler up the stairs with five bags of groceries once before you are totally disgusted with stairs.

This is indeed a problem. In our building there would be three legal options since we have no bicycle storage:
  • inside the apartment
  • attic
  • outside
When the pram is too heavy to carry, you need to either look for another model or a building more suitable for prams.

As it is a violation of fire regulations that may change any day.

When choosing our apartment we skipped some with fabulous view because they lacked elevator. I guess not all prams a equally heavy, but we did not go that route.

Fair call. I haven't read the regulations. In our case, it's an area that while is near the door, is actually not a section anyone walks through, ever (behind a noticeboard/partition half-wall, and who knows, it might even have been intended for prams). For one in-laws', it's under the stairs. Both possibly still in violation and both ridiculously stupid to actually ban, but this is Finland, where the rules rule.

Setting fire to a pram... people suck. :|

This is the area in my own flat (not near the stairs).

So this appears to be a designated area for something since it is intentionally not in the line of walking. I can't tell if it's prams, motorised wheelchairs, or what. It's unmarked. There is actually a second exit not requiring walking through there, so perhaps that is why. Maybe the building was before the fire regulations came in? I don't know. I don't have small children and have never used the space.

Regardless OP, even if you are not carrying that pram up the stairs, carrying the child and the shopping up the stairs will make going outdoors a chore for you or your wife to even leave the house.
