Hello All,

I'm moving to to the Helsinki city area mid year. I'll be telecommuting (working from home over the internet) and need some advice about getting the Internet connected at home.

How does internet access work at home? Do most people have an ADSL like service which uses the phone line? Cable?
How much are you roughly spending on Internet access?
What speeds are generally available from home (1500/24000), (512k/8mbit) .. ?
Do you have a link to your ISP's website?

Both are options in homes that get cable tv. (Some co-ops and apartments may have something else available to them, such as a VDSL, HomePNA, or even Ethernet jacks, but ADSL and cable are by far the most common options.)

If you're going to live in Helsinki the best provider is Elisa, they own the lines, all the others rent them, so if there's a problem guess who gets shoved to the back of the queue. look out for their deals. Also when I moved out they were about 10 days late with my connection, so I rang them up and moaned like hell, I got 2 months free and they waived the connection fee.

Elisa doesn't own Welho's lines, since Welho uses cable network instead of the PSTN.

Elisa also has the crappiest customer service and issues with their network, just do a Google search. I'd switch over to Nebula in a heartbeat if I could, but I'm stuck with Elisa.

I used Elisa for years, never had a problem with them and when I did I was quite happy with how they dealt with it, still using the old ADSL modem they gave me for free when I first signed up with them about 3 years ago. Wasn't sure who owned the cable, thought someone would correct me.

What network provider to use is a common question though.

As nobody has put any prices on it yet, although I don't live in Helsinki, and our connection is with someone other than those listed by Jukka DNA, from what I have seen in adverts, the prices tend to be similar across Finland.

In the last 5 years we've had

1Mb in 256kb out Sonera ADSL €35/ month
2Mb in 256kb out DNA cable €35/month
8Mb in 1Mb out DNA ADSL €40/month
currently on
100Mb in 10Mb out DNA Ethernet €45/month

The present connection works with Ethernet jacks in the walls, no modem is required between the wall and the PC, this tends to be available in modern buildings.

Hello. I am browsing for a proper post to ask this and this seems like an appropriate one. Sorry if im mistaken. I just moved in Helsinki. I've asked around a bit and people told me that you need to be here for at least two years before being able to purchase internet at home. Is that true? And if that's the case, is there a way around?

You will get a contract without a problem, but you will have to pay a deposit of several hundred Euro (I think it was 200 I paid for Sonera some 4 years ago). Normally they deduct the running cost from the deposit, so the deposit is more an advance on your monthly payments.

Some goes for mobile phone contracts, but they asked for a 700 Euro deposit (both Sonera and DNA), so I happily stayed with prepaid for the first two years.

many apartment blocks are already wired with ethernet cables. There is a router serving all flats in the basement and the housing company normally does a deal such as 10Mbs free of charge for everybody and higher speeds if you pay. You normally have to find out who's supplying the service and sign up and the service is enabled remotely (sometimes the same day).
Even older blocks get rewired in this way (often when all the plumbing is replaced when the building is 40-50 years old).

I use mobile hot spot.
I bought a prepaid sim card from elisa. Then I bought unlimited 4g for one month which cost 19.90 euros.
It's quite fast at home, but little bit annoying because every time when I want to use internet at home, I have to turn on mobile hot spot.
But except that, it's very affordable and satisfying. You don't need cable or contract or monthly bill, just need mobile phone.
