Will you get higher salary with a Master's degree?

Post by lkpro91 » Tue Oct 04, 2016 2:22 pm

Hi guys,

I just wonder if I would get a better salary in Helsinki when I have the Master's Degree. I finished my study and will get the official degree very soon and my company is now asking for it. I know it may not matter much in IT but does that count in business positions? :D

Cheers,

Some public-sector pay scales are linked to academic qualifications. But not so much in the private sector. It depends what you do and to what extent your qualifications are relevant to your work. It could make it easier to get a job in the first place, but that also depends on the sector etc

It does matter in IT if you're doing consulting. I don't have much time to explain here, but there are billing tiers that the company can use to bill its customers depending on the consultant's educational level and number of years of experience, and it's relatively standard in Finland in some sectors. This means the company can charge more for you, so this gives you leverage to ask for higher salary.

In other fields in the private sector, it largely depends on how this new degree can help you bring more money to the company. Also, you're the only one who can answer whether the degree does indeed raise your value. If your value is higher, then you have basis to ask for more salary.
Every case is unique. You can't measure the result of your application based on arbitrary anecdotes online.
