At work, it depends on the work place and its culture whether there is a coffee break. In certain fields of work - e.g. in a factory type-of environment, a break at regular intervals is mandated by law (which along with a lunch break might be the only breaks one gets during the work day), and - as many people drink coffee, that's what they do, and maybe have a smoke if so inclined. In other work places which are more free in nature, usually office type of work, it's just a matter of preference and habit. I, for one, don't drink coffee, so I don't have coffee breaks, but in a previous work-place where we had a tight-knit team, I went along to the office lounge area when others gathered there, just to socialize.
