Background to the frustration for many is that the parliament paid 300 million of the taxpayers money in renovating it, whereas a new building like Odi could be built in 100 million. Most people in Finland do NOT agree or subscribe to the old monument thing, particularly in the grim face of economic realities, like no funding for the childrens' hospital, geriatric care, schooling, daycare etc.

Add to that the Internet is rife with comments on the use of the word "pyhä", i.e. holy, that a parliamentary person said something "unholy" had been done! I.e. there wasn't any outrage or claims to unholiness when poor care led to the deaths of the older people, when racist rants are called out on the innocent violating them of their integrity, and yet when somebody climbs up the pillar, then that was unholy. FWIW, I remember reading that the antic was well choreographed and not a spot surprise thing, it was choreographed and the climbers were professionals.

Jeah... that project got up to speed when private people started to chime in. In tune of 38 millions. The whole project cost 184 millions. So @#$% me if it didn't get funding!

The point was that there was no political desire to do this, till people started to complain and chip in. I am happy to pay 184 million of my tax monies to a childrens' hospital. 30 mil. for the building renovation is okay in my mind. 300 million - not.

Renovations tend to cost a lot when museum people are involved. So maybe it would be more proper to talk about conservation-restoration. And that project was 10 years. The main house only took three and was done under the budget. Budget which was originally 120M€... scope creep... but maybe it was smart move do do it now than to move the people out again soon.

Btw, I just learned that the children's hospital was done by foundation. And that foundation got private donations and donations from government and HUS. That was due to law that prohibits solicitations for money from private persons to public causes. They already have license to tax for that.
