Thank you everyone for the past months. It’s time for me to leave this forum. I finally got my positive decision today. It took me exactly 18 months. I proved my identity on 1.6.2021 then moved to stage 2 on 8.4.2022 and got decision on 2.12.2022.

I just walked in yesterday to the police station in Helsinki and it didn't take me more than 15 minutes of waiting without an appointment. I went close to noon, but I guess generally it is better as early as you are able to go, for a shorter queue. Also just took 1 day to actually get the passport.

Thanks for replying. Do you think it’s possible to get on the same day? I have flight on Tuesday because actually didn’t expect to get it yesterday. So I have only Monday to get passport.

You can! (I've seen this work for friends and family).

You need to put in your application by 09:00 so you can get it around 16:00 on the same day as long as you land in the daily quota. So you should go as early as possible.

The pickup locations/points for express passport is limited, so check if they are convenient for you. But if you are in Helsinki, one of them is the Airport, so that might be convenient for you before travelling.

There is also a possibility for an emergency passport at the airport (check https://poliisi.fi/en/getting-a-passport), but I think you should only use this as a last resort. (I don't know much about this either other than the fact that this service exists)

To deal with Finnish passport handling, yes you are expected to speak Finnish/Swedish at the police station.
However, I'm quite sure that they cannot take away your citizenship if you do not.
I was a little nervous when I went - however the person there went out of her way to steer me in the right direction and help, and we made it through the process, in Finnish only. I think most Finns are flattered that we have made some effort to learn their language, and are quite understanding.
If you can't speak the language at all, then you probably haven't got citizenship.

You can talk to them in English if you want. After you got the citizenship you don't have to prove your finnish skills to anyone.

Hi, silent reader here. I applied for citizenship exactly 07.12.2021, I got my citizenship approved 1.12.2022.
I updated my salary slips everyother month. My application moved straight to ready when they were processing. They did not ask for more documents.


A little back ground story: I called them several times and the last time I called 1.12 demanding an explanation after seeing on Facebook about someone who commented on their last comment got citizenship in three months. I asked them so many questions and including why they are not using the same yardstick for everyone. I actually told them that the system discriminates some people over some people because that’s the only explanation for why someone with the exact same situation as me who applied after me got their citizenship approved in 3 months while I have to wait close to a year. After that conversation exactly 10 mins after I refreshed my email and my decision was made.

My advise: call them, tell them you have a right to know exactly what it is with your application and you don’t want answer you can find on the website, you want information that is exactly about your application. You want them to look into your application check if the years and application doesn’t have a problem. Prove them basically. Getting citizenship is not our right but they do owe a right to be fair and we can question that.
