Citizenship application and incomplete PhD

Post by morse24 » Sat Jun 08, 2024 4:55 am

Hei all,

I came to Finland 10 years ago for a PhD but had to leave it due to funding issues halfway through. After leaving the PhD, I have been in a permanent job in Finland and also have a PR. Recently I took the YKI test and am now working on submitting the citizenship application, but was wondering whether my incomplete PhD degree will cause a problem with my citizenship application?? I have no fines/crimes/bad credit and don't belong to the list of special countries on which Migri focuses and as you can see I have close to 9 years of continuous permit stay.

Any ideas/insight on this situation?

Your incomplete PhD degree is not a problem for citizenship.

If there was any problem with it, it would have been a problem during your first RP/PR application after leaving the PhD.

Thanks for your quick reply! One thing to clarify here which I think the post wasn't clear about, is that I got my PR during my PhD itself, and then I switched to a job seeing that grants aren't available + burnout issues after working for 60-70 hrs a week for so long. Now I think my PhD has gone to passivoitu, and have no interest in going back to finish it since that would mean unpaid part-time work for months/years and that's not feasible. Hence my query about the implications of having this incomplete PhD in my record for my citizenship application.

There is nothing in the requirements for citizenship where this would be relevant.

Not finishing your PhD studies is not a crime, and your means of support of the past 4 or 5 years might include PhD salary or work salary or both.

Just want to point out that the account writing those making a lot of rumors and he/she 'know' a lot of cases :))) Let's me give you one example, he/she wrote that he/she know a friend of a friend getting the automated decision within 3 mins after submiting. However, until now, no single other people confirms that they also get such things. Many people sent emails to the Migri and Migri answered to many people that there are no such thing and automated decision does not work like that.

Therefore, I am skeptical about all the posts of that person.

My case, I am in the fifth year of PhD (I have not completed it yet) and I already got citizenship. Other PhD students likes me who planned to apply for citizenship also got that all before getting the degree. PhD in Finland is a job, that's why we get Permit A for working people right at the beginning. Note that I do not even have contract with the Uni (some people have), I only receive grant/scholarship.
