Kela benefits while waiting for residence permit

Post by elisehj » Mon Jul 29, 2024 2:07 am

Hi all! First post here, nice to meet you :)

I wanted to see if anyone has had experience with this situation. I will be calling unemployment services to check as well. I first came to Finland on an internship residence permit and before it expired I applied for a family ties permit due to my marriage with my Finnish husband. Financially, things aren't so good, and being unable to work isn't helping (at least, I think I can't work until the new permit is ready, since I was only permitted to work with my internship provider and that opportunity has ended). Would I be able to apply for unemployment benefits while my new permit is processing? I originally assumed no as I think all my rights are suspended till the new permit is ready, but I do wonder.

Thanks all :)

Regardless of eligibility for unemployment benefits, social assistance can be useful https://www.kela.fi/social-assistance
