Hi all, a contact of mine reported they received their decision yesterday.
28.12.2023: Application submitted.
29.12.2023: Visited migri and received the diary number.
1.10.2023: Decision made!
(Yes! I didn’t get anything in between! Just a sms which said I have a decision ready on my account.)

Looks like no updates during last 2 days, they appeared to have processed December but nothing from January 2024 as yet. Or is there anyone who has an update?

I apologize for the hackneyed question, did any of the 2022 applicants receive a decision in September?

Hi,

I have a question regarding applying for the Finnish passport. The Poliisi website says that I need to prove my identity with an identity card issued by a Finnish authority.
So, can I prove my identity and later pick up the passport shipment with my passport from my home country which the embassy in Finland issued?
Sorry if this was discussed already in the Forum.

They have written this on their website
Verifying your identity at the collection point: If you pick up your passport yourself, you must show the tracking number found on the collection note and verify your identity using a passport or identity card issued by a Finnish authority. You can use an old passport or identity card if it expired no more than a year ago, as the photograph on the identity document can still be used to identify you. A driving licence is not an accepted proof of identity for collecting a passport.
But if you are a new finnish citizen and don't have a finnish identity card already (and will certainly not have a finnish passport) then you cannot collect it from a collection point and must collect it from a police station. There is no mention of what ID the police stations accept. They don't make it clear that there is a difference between collecting it at a "collection point" and collecting it at a police station, but do mention this distinction when filling out the application online. you are not allowed to select "collection point".

Perhaps the police station will check your identity with fingerprints matching those given at the time of applying.

Following. My guess is that this week is still for the last bits of the last week of December 2023.

I sent an email to ask about my application because it has been more than one year since I applied and this is their answer:

Hei,

Has someone received the same answer before??

Finally the day came for me (from a non EU country in continuous permanent employment for over 25 years)

1999 Moved to Finland on a full time job contract.
27.12.2023 Applied for citizenship
28.12.2023 Visited service point, diary number created (169xx)
29.12.2023 Starting position in the queue was 8660
27.09.2024 Processing has started
27.09.2024 Positive decision two hours later

Next I will see how travel works without a valid residence card since I will leave the country in three days time so won't have a Finnish passport by then.
Hi, can you tell me about your experience about travelling without a valid residence card and without Finnish passport?

Have you informed migri about this? How did you enter Finland back?

I think I will have the same situation as yours based on the predicted timeline.

Thanks.

When I left via helsinki airport schengen border control I only showed my (non finnish) passport - thinking that the residence card is automatically cancelled when citizenship is awarded a couple of days earlier. The border officer went through my passport looking for a stamp and I held the residence card and said "I used to have one of these". He took it and scanned it as normal and told me that I should always show the card (the term "used to have" was probably lost on him).

So from this it seems their system doesn't know my residence card is "cancelled". Perhaps their system is offline compared to the population register (I already checked and that had my citizenship within minutes of being awarded it).

It's unclear if entry will be the same - I am still abroad and yet to return. I will find out in a few days!

To collect your passport at the pick-up point (R-kioski for me), you can show your Finnish ID card (the one marked "not valid for travel"). My passport was ready for pick-up a mere two days after my police station visit (and I paid for the regular, not expedited, service). A couple of days after that, I received a second notification to collect my new Finnish ID card. Again, I showed my "old" Finnish ID card, as it was still valid. Absolutely no issues.

The visit at the police station was quick: fingerprinting (both index fingers) and confirmation of identity (can't remember if I showed my "old" Finnish ID or my national passport). In any case, absolutely no issues.

When you apply online for your Finnish passport, it's worth applying for your ID card at the same time. That way, you save a few euros, and the renewal period for both will always be at the same time in the future (saving you money and time at the photo shop, as the same picture will be used for both documents).

If you haven't received citizenship yet, inform migri about your absence via secure messaging. That way, they will know not to grant citizenship while you're abroad. You simply re-enter (assuming you're coming from outside Schengen) using your national passport and your still-valid Finnish residence card.
