Moving companies

Post by devon » Sun Jun 13, 2004 10:15 pm

We're planning for our move from Plymouth UK to Jyvaskyla to take place in late August - early September.

Would anyone be able to recommend a reliable and reasonably priced moving company?

We would be ready to move our stuff to a storage somewhere near London if Plymouth is too much out of the way - just desperate to get the price down since we're paying for the move. :(

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

How much stuff are you talking about?

My wife and I moved to Helsinki from close to London a couple of years ago. We Rented a half sized shipping container (20ft x 8ft x8ft). It was Driven to our house in Reading, where we had 2 hours to pack it ourselves. It was then available about 10 days later in helsinki, and was driven to our flat where we had 2 hours to unpack it ourselves. This was 2 years ago and much closer to the ports for departure and arrival, but for some kind of idea, the cost was about £1400.

If your interested in this, I can try and find the details of the company we used, which I had personally had very good service from.

Thanks for the info. We have quite a bit of stuff but only some furniture. The two hour limit to pack/unpack sounds scary. We've done quite a few moves - with movers doing the work - and it was never done in two hours. You managed ok then?

The only things we had in the way of furniture as a double bed and a sofa. The rest was already boxed up. They didn't actually set stopwatch going, so may be a little flexible?

we've just used grundell. they weren't that expensive, were friendly and pleasantly rapid. unfazed by our street and generally cool. good people.
the stuff appears to be unharmed so far... i have to inspect it when i get in next week....

Good news.
We found out this week the move will be a part of the current employer's severance package. I can now check the yellow pages and arrange a local company with a couple of strong men to come and do it all ... :D

Wow, excellent news!

Amazing however that the severence package is flexible enough to cover moving costs to Finland!

To Tampere

Post by chick » Wed Jun 23, 2004 12:56 pm

Me and my husband are moving to Tampere from Brighton in December. However, I am going to be a student and my husband unemployed- so now company paying for the moving thou....

What would be the cheapest way to get our stuff from Brighton to Tampere?

Has anyone hired a van and done the driving themselves?

I tried this (http://www.puljula.com ) company in finland last week but have not heard anything back...

So any advice how to get our stuff to Finland cheaply is welcome!

Yes, we used Puljula last summer to move here from NW London. They were the cheapest quote from a number of UK and Finnish companies. I guess this was because they were able to combine ours with a couple of other moves to Finland.

It all went pretty much to plan although the two young lads who arrived in their big truck hadn't been told by their office that they had to remove our sofa from the first floor window or pack our glassware. Luckily they made a phone call and got on with it(with a bit of help). We had packed the rest in cardboard boxes ourselves.

Thinking back now, that big mother of a truck with Rovaniemi, Finland written in big letters down both sides must have raised a few eyebrows  from our neighbours going to buy their Sunday morning papers, it only just managed to squeeze down our street.

After waving them goodbye and worrying if everything would arrive safely it did and nothing was missing.

at least we have good 5 months to save...

thanks :D

Would be expensive to hire a van as you'd have to pay the petrol and ferry fares to get it back to the UK,
How about buying an old transit van and just scrapping it when you get here? or maybe sell it to someone going back to the UK from Finland?
Or buy a decent sized box trailor and tow it over, then you can register it here and sell it on!

Where in Brighton are you? I lived there last time I was in the UK.

We're moving from London (Harrow) to Helsinki (Pasila) and we are using AngloPacific. Fortunately we have no furniture to move just everyday items like clothing, kitchen stuff and books. Thing you need to remember is that the companies charge according to volume and not weight, so avoid taking bulky items.

AP charge £145 for the first box then £18 for every additional box. So we are likely to fork out £400, not including the insurance.

Worth also considering Allfreight (http://www.allfreight.co.uk) and Parcel2go. and if I remember correctly, one of these companies will give a student rate (sorry cant remember which one)

All the best
