What about cycling? Is somebody interested in cycling? Road racing, track cycling or MTB. Are some of you competing cycling races in Finland?

I would like to go more as well. I have been cycling for many years, on some higher level as well, but the last year I didn´t really have much time for it eather. Because I was busy setting up a company (http://www.bikesupportfinland.com) over here for my graduation.
Now that has been finished I would have some time for more cycling again. Although I will go to Holland next week for almost 3 weeks and when I come back I will soon marry over here. So maybe after that again
If you guys life in the Helsinki area we could go together for a ride once.
Lets keep in touch about that.
BTW Arno, why don´t you try to do some down-hill or MTB, that´s much more popular over here and if you are a former BMX racer you should have the right techniques for it!

Sounds like a plan. Are you going to Holland for holiday? I'm gonna be in Holland from 3rd-17th of July.
Maybe I can catch still a BMX competition there, I think it's just before summerstop.
I haven't been training since '98, and I have an ancient MTB, which probably wouldn't suit for the downhill things. I am going to Holland to do some exams that I missed, so I can finish my study over there. I am Dutch as well HOI!
I will be there between 23 June and 12 July. Let me know if you´re gonne compete in a BMX race. Maybe I can come and watch
When I was younger I have tried a few trainings at the BMX track, but it didn´t really fit in my road- and track (velodrome) cycling, so I didn´t do it anymore after those few times.
In Holland I have been a trainer of the National junior track cycling ´team´, for the last years. The times that I´m back in Holland I mostly join some trainings and help the union out if they need some help. It´s very nice to do. Next week Sunday I will go to a training at the velodrome in Alkmaar again to give training to the junior sprinters. And from 2 to 4 July the Dutch Championships on the track will be in Alkmaar, I think I will be there as well to help the guys a bit.
BTW there are some (former) BMX riders involved in track cycling as well. Bas de Bever helps the Elite sprinters, because there are some similarities in the trainings for both disciplines. Also Willy Kanis (world champion BMX juniors last year and leader in the World Cup this year) started to train with us about 2 years ago. This season she did 2 world cups on the track and not too bad. She became 3th twice in the Team Sprint for ladies, together with Yvonne Hijgenaar. I think Willy can become a very good track cyclist, she is very explosive. She only has to learn more to be a cyclist and not a BMX-er. And in the future she will win some medalls at big races I think. Another former BMX-er is Jamy Staff. An English former (many times) world champion BMX. He has been a proffesional in the US for some years and won lots of money over there. But anyway he chose to try something on the track a few years ago and he became already world champion team sprint and this season (a month ago) world champion keirin. I think you have heard about those riders, isn´t it?

Yeah, I know pretty much all of them. I've been in the scene for just over 20 years, so...
I rode in the same class with Bas de Bever when he was still BMX-ing (I'm not half as good as he was, though), and I trained in Kampen for 4 years, together with (among others) Willy Kanis.
And I trained with Corine Dorland, she's also in the MTB scene, though not as prominent as Bas de Bever.
I rode 4 years with KNWU, but that was a bit too high a level for me. Too little training, too much work, you know the drill. Had to make a choice between work and sport. Since BMX isn't a money making thing in Holland I chose for the work (maybe I should've done it like Robert de Wilde, he seems to be making a good living in the US as an A-pro).
I was quite succesful, though, with the amateurs
I don't think I'll be riding in Holland. I'm not gonna take my bike and since I haven't been BMX-ing in about 4 years I think I'll save myself the bite in the dust
I'm just gonna miss the World Championship in Valkenswaard, 23rd-24th-25th of July

I have been many times at the 'champions parties' same time as she was, because she became (almost) every year world champion BMX and I was quite often one of the medall winners at Dutch Championships. She is really a Champion! Bad that she chose to stop BMX-ing. But she didn´t like to do it anymore, because there were no good competitors, she won almost everything.
She started to be quite good at the MTB and even on the road as well, but the last years she is not that good anymore.
I still she her sometimes at the track when she is watching a race or training of her boyfriend.

I didn´t know that de Bever is that serious in BMX again. Even competing the worlds, then he would have been training quite a lot again I think. Or is he that good that he is still the best Dutch man even without serious training?

I know that he's been BMX-ing occasionally and training on request also, but I didn't know myself he had BMX-plans again.
I'm not sure, but I think the selection for Dutch competitors to the World Championship is free, so he didn't need to go through the selection competitions.
Hopefully Eurosport will show some of the Championship on tv. Otherwise we'll just have to see from the net what the results are.

I used to do a lot of road racing, city centre criteriums and time trials as a schoolboy and junior in the UK, but gave it up after leaving college. Bought a bike at Uni but someone stole it so that was the end of any comeback. Now finally bought another bike after many many years and it would be good if there was a group of riders to go out with. I remember when I first started club riding we had club runs on Sunday mornings. Basically anywhere between 10 and 20 of us, depending on the weather, would go out for a 30 to 60 mile ride which was generally done at a gentle pace. If anyone knows of a similar set up in Finland I would be keen to go along. Bit too old now for the racing scene.
