Hei,
I applied for my citizenship last night and I was told that my application is waiting for processing and I don't need to visit the service point. I want to know if someone else has had this before and how long it takes to get a diary number. (Edit:just got my diary number)

The second thing is that I applied my citizenship with an Ammattitutkinto 150 osp completed in Finnish and I wanted to go to migri for interview and talk to them in Finnish and show my Finnish language skills but it does not seem possible now. I want to know does it matter and will migri reach out to my teacher to ask him about my finnish langauge skills or will they just check online for verification if I my degree is real. The problem with the degree is that the courses shown in the transcript only have either passed or fail as a grade rather than 1 to 5 to show how good my skills are. I asked for my supervisor for a hand written certificate to state that I finished the entire degree in Finnish and to grade my Finnish language skill and he wrote me the certificate, Can anyone guide me if its a good idea to attach this certificate as a supplement to my application right now or no?

The third thing I want to know is that what are the chances that if the applicant does not need to visit the service point, that his application will be placed in the automation queue? Does anyone have any info about this?

Hi

I am in same situation as you are

Yesterday I applied finnish citizenship application. 5 years 7 months in Finland. Married to A finn (native) had A permit now P. Non -EU.

Instead of doing YKI test, I used my amattitutkinto certificate :

Puhtaus- ja kiinteistöpalvelualan ammattitutkinto, 150 osp Toimitilahuollon osaamisala toimitilahuoltaja (AT)

It was oppisopimus.

Some people says 150 osp not enough need 180 osp. I might loose 550€ 😬

I have next monday identification check at migri. Applied in enterfinland.

What is your ammattitutkinto?

Thank you.

It’s very important to ask migri questions first before applying. Take your time to do things right before application it will help your application.

Hi, I don't know about point systems in ammattitutkinto, but if it's not enough they would not reject your application immediately, rather they'd tell you to take Yki for instance. You have to fulfill this requirement when they make a decision on your application, not necessarily when you apply.

Hei,
I have many friends who got their citizenship on the same degree as me, My degree is yrittäjyyden ammattitutkinto from Sedu. I attached the hand written certificate from my degree supervisor as proof of my langauge in case they want to verify my language skills. Now I am just waiting for my application to go into processing. Hoping for the best. I did some research online and the law for ammattitutkinto says the following "Ammattitutkintojen laajuus on 120, 150 tai 180 osaamispistettä." The law number is L 531/2017, A 673/2017. You can google it. Migri also specifically states this law on their language requirements page in the Vocational Training section. The 180osp requirement is for Perustutkinto and it can not be less than that. Also migri might contact your teacher if they suspect that a major part of your studies were practical studies with an internship and did not require you to communicate in english or the langauge of instructions and commucation between you and your teachers was done in english rather than finnish. This thing solely depends on the previous applicant who used the same degree to apply for citizenship. Good Luck

Hi! I’ve been lurking here for some time and wanted to share my decision for reference as well.

Applied: 27.6.2024
Visited Migri and received a diary number: 16.7.2024
23.4.2025: Started processing and decision received (~2 hours)

Background: Moved here in 2019 with my spouse, stayed with family permit first and then with work permit after being employed in 2021. Permanent permit since 2023. Applied with my child who was born here.

Hello everyone,

It is my time to share the good news. Here is some information:
- Applied and identified myself on 13.06.2022
- Application moved to stage 2 on 14.01.2025
- Positive decision on 14.01.2025 after 1.5 hrs with no additional requests has been made. So it took 31 month and 1 day. My application was up-to-date. Like I renewed my home country passport and did some travelling in between, so I kept my application updated. So they didn’t ask for any additional documents during the processing.

Some background information:
- I came to Finland in 2017 as a student, so I had B residence permit, did some part time jobs until I graduated and then switched to A “work-based permit” after graduation.

- Applied for the permanent residence permit in 2024 and got it on the following day. The officer told me that it would take 9-13 months, but I got it on the following day.

- I am not a refugee, with all respect to fellow refugees. No criminal record, nothing at all. So I decided to take a break from the forum and read in silence because some folks used to question a lot or accuse me of having something hidden. It was mentally draining.

Overall, I have no idea why migri placed me in the longest queue. And it was frustrating everytime they prolonged the waiting time. I messaged them back in 2023 and they told that my application will take the longest processing time back then “I don’t remember”. So it did.

I messaged them again in November 2024, when it was 29 months since I applied, and they said that they will process it in a month. So I emailed them again in December 2024, and they promised again that it will be processed in a month and apologised for the long waiting. But the Christmas and new year holidays have stretched the processing time. But now it came!

The long processing time is mentally exhausting, and terrible. I feel happy for the positive decision but also sad that I had to face this unreasonably long waiting time. I do understand how does it feel to wait for 31 months.

To all fellow 2022 applicants, please take care of your mental health, and I hope that everyone here gets a positive decision soon. This forum has helped me a lot in many ways, from being updated with the information to discussing the implementations of the new citizenship laws. Thanks for 2022 members who were chatting with me from time to time as well. I have been a senior member in this forum 😎

- Side note: if they tell you that your application will take x amount of time to be processed, believe them and forget about your application. This is what happened with me. I might be wrong too. As said, the process was mentally draining, but I was surrounded by good people and friends who always told me not to worry and calmed me down. I am grateful for them!

To everyone waiting, please live your life and try to forget about your application. I fully understand the stress and everything associated with waiting, and I wish the best for everyone here.

Thank you and God bless 🙏
First off, my sincere congratulations!!! As a member of that 2022 group, I can fully sympathize with what you went through. However, I guess I can count myself lucky in that it took "just" 24 months in my case. Nonetheless, I can identify with the feelings and state of mind you described.

And you're right, beyond asking migri for updates, there's not much you can do. In situations like this, it's best to be as patient as you can, seek support where you can get it, and ignore people who make unfounded and wild guesses about your situation.

Again, my sincere congratulations, and make sure to celebrate once you are in a state of mind to do so. The feeling of being a "Finn" will really hit home the next time you travel and show your Finnish passport!

Thank you 🙏 Really appreciated.
And yup, 24 months are such a long waiting too. I struggled to understand why they do it this way. And I wasn’t able to get any answers from their side when I asked why it is taking so long. They just gave the standard answer of “wait patiently”. Also I contacted a lawyer and they checked everything, but they said there is nothing to do except to wait. I dunno if it could have speeded the process if I tried to proceed with the lawyer or chancellor of justice, but I did not because they just don’t force Migri to process the applications. I might be wrong too, so I dunno.
Totally get it—24 months is a long wait, and not getting clear answers makes it harder. You did your part, and it's tough when the system feels unfair. Hoping for quicker progress and more justice ahead.

Hi everyone,
Maybe someone has a similar background. I know every case is very individual, but the curiosity and anxiety are through the roof!

In 2020, my husband and I moved to Finland (we’re both from non-EU countries) — he came as a specialist, and I came as his spouse (so we both had type A residence permits). In summer 2024, we received permanent residence.

In January 2024, I applied for Finnish citizenship (as the spouse of a non-EU citizen) — I’ve passed the YKI test. It has now been over 15 months, and the application is still in phase 1 and hasn’t moved to the processing stage yet.

Has anyone had a similar case? How did it go for you?

I don’t want to call Migri and disturb them.

I get the anxiety bit. My application (2022) sat in stage 1 for 23 months   . My situation was/is similar and different at the same time: non-EU, A-permit, married to a Finn. Self-employed, so my application went into the "long" queue apparently.

Each case is different. Calling/emailing migri doesn't speed the process up either. The fact you are both permanent residents means you can sit back comfortably... and wait.

Best of luck!

Hi. We have a very similar situation. Arrived in 2020, I as a specialist and my wife and children came with me. In 2024 we got permanent residence permits. All applied in June 2024 for citizenship, slightly before 4 years in Finland. Applications have been in phase 1 for more than 10 months now.
