I'm struggling with learning Finnish, so maybe Swedish is a viable alternative? It's still an official language, everything translated to both languages and you can study in Swedish in University. Main problem would be even tho Finn's learning Swedish since school, they don't really use it and actual Swedish speaking community in small pockets on the coast of the country. What do you think?
Swedish is a viable alternative, for example if you are interested in acquiring Finnish citizenship. You would be able to get by in Swedish in certain parts of the country, e.g., west coast, Helsinki, Turku. And yes, government institutions provide service in Swedish. However, you will invariably encounter situations where your counterpart does not speak Swedish, is uncomfortable speaking the language or is averse to speaking it. In those cases, even an elementary knowledge of Finnish will help.
