Divorce
About the 50/50 splitting of stuff:
According to my missus, who has "hands on experience", when it comes to property issues where the owner must be recorded, i.e. a house, the split is as the ownership. That is, if a couple, such as my wife an I own 50% each, so split the tax breaks 50% etc etc, then if (god forbid) we were to divorce, we would have to sell the house to split the profits, or one person buys the other one out. However, if it was say all in my name, then she has no rights to the house what so ever, and vise-versa.

AleXa,
Sounds complicated. I would find a lawyer that I trust and let the communication go through him/her. Now, there are expenses to lawyers and you said you were a student. Do you have any income?
If you cancel the divorce, then you are still married and all that means. You are still in a committed relationship even if separated by distance. Maybe the lawyer was right and the agreement gave you the best of what you want but I would get a second opinion on that and ask questions, write down the answers, do not leave until you understand.
Do not feel afraid to get some counseling for the severe emotional costs of a divorce.
Any children?

It the bank recognises you as joint owners, it does matter who pays the most - I pay everything, but both my wife and I are joint owners, and we both get the tax relief (well 50% of the total each).AleXa wrote:alloydog
well, its on both of our names, and he cannot do anything with a house without my permission. so i assume that i am owner of a half of it too..
I do not believe Finnish law allows one person to take the other to the cleaners, so to speak.

If it is the 2-phase divorce one just doesn't "do anything". There is a "best before" date given in the document that starts the 6 month thinking period. It says something the 2nd petition can be made starting from (today+6 months) and at latest must be made (tody+6months + ... x months?) or it will be void and a new application must be made for the 6 months to start again.
And for lawyer - you go to city office called "kunnallinen oikeusaputoimisto". They give free public advice and take care of matters like this. A bit like "if you cannot afford a lawyer one will be appointed to you". Thats one of the reasons we pay taxes.

Check this out..
I am told by one lady in my office that when she got into a divorce dispute about the 50/ 50 ownership with her ex...she went to her bank where they have the home purchase loan and they apparently have "experts/lawyers" who will advise/suggest what to do/accept not accept.
Anyone else heard of this service?
Not the sort of thing where one just walks up to the cash desk and ask about I imagine it must be a special office or something...

Re: Divorce
Anyone remember how this worked out for AleXa in the end?
I was Googling to learn something about the marriage counseling market in Finland and this thread came up.
AleXa seems to have quit coming in June of 2007. Before that, she was asking about a lawyer for a friend or a "friend" (not really clear which) with a confiscated passport who was facing potential deportation because a marriage came apart. Later she asked about how to translate avoliitto for an official document. She seems to have considered having a baby. And she posted a lot about bongos and music and the injustice of restrictions on smoking in public establishments.
Then she just stopped.
Now it bugs me wondering whether AleXa's husband got away with some kind of dirty trick in the end or everything got amicably resolved and AleXa just happened to lose interest in Finland Forum.

As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.
