General Advice Appreciated!

Post by shakenvac » Fri Sep 24, 2004 11:22 am

Hi there!
I'm an Irish girl who is currently living and working in Dublin. I plan to move to Helsinki next year with my finnish boyfriend, and I want to do my best to be as well-prepared as possible. I would be really grateful if anyone would have any tips as to how to approach a move, how to get started with preparations for the move next year.
I'm currently studying finnish at night after work, and I read the forum for advice on getting work in Finland etc., but any extra hints and recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Hmmm.. I'll be in Dublin around the 18-19th next month with F. We might be bribed to reveal national relocation secrets.

So far have found out the "Irish Question" to be: No sources for Taytos or Barry's Tea so better stock up. All possible interesting sports eg. Hurling, Gaelic Football not to mention Rugby get taken "Off Air" by RTL or any carrier that might have their stuff on the net because of "exclusive broadcasting rights" usually given to some satellite company like SKY you can't get in Finland even you stood on your head. So enjoy the sports in telly while it lasts. Eurosport shows more Sumo than Rugby...

mmm Taytos...yum!
Well I currently work for a large bank and have 3 years experience in office/accounts/banking. I have a degree in Accounting and Finance. But I realise that my chances of getting office work are very slim, and to be honest, i'd be willing to work at whatever I can until i'm more established!I'll be living in Helsinki, so I hope to look for work in that area.
My ultimate dream would be to work in an area related to the health food industry (I know, a bit of a change from banking!) but in the meantime i'll do what I have to!
The boyfriend is an electronic music producer, he rents an apartment in Helsinki, so I'm lucky in the sense that I won't be stuck for somewhere to stay!
Thanks for the advice, i'll keep on studying and browsing the forum, and if I have any more questions i'll post them up!
kiitos viela kerran!

Hiya shakenvac!

As far as I know, I'm the only other Irish girl here, we are *such* a minority it always freaks me out. I think there were 53 Irish females resident in Finland last year - my manager likes to say, "almost 2% of them are in my department!"

Which probably gives away the fact that I work in software...

As Hank said, but you probably already know, Taytos and Barry's Tea. If you don't drink Barry's, bring some anyway for me ;-) Rashers are also a popular unofficial import.

Weird things: whenever I'm home I buy a pair of jeans, since finding a 30" leg here in any style of jeans outside of "ugly" is impossible - but I'm really short, so this mightn't apply to you. I also stock up on things from Boots, but it may just be me... there isn't a Finnish equivalent, and I get dissatisfied with the selection here.

What else? I miss things like the Irish way of speaking, so a fast internet connection lets me stream live radio and feel like I'm still in touch. I've had to significantly change how I speak to be understood, but I'm from Cork so that mightn't apply for you (but I am and was very "well-spoken", so you could bear it in mind anyway). Hiberno slang is unlikely to be understood, and it is an eye-opener discovering how much of what I say is Hiberno slang (again, remember I'm from Cork).

Good pints of Guinness are hard to come by. Spend all of your time between now and leaving Ireland in Mulligan's. Finnish beers cause horrible hangovers, I wasn't even a regular Guinness drinker before I moved here, but switched out of self-defense.

Oh. And I've also found that Irish companies are absolutely useless at coping with somebody who lives in another country, so I recommend that you sever all business connections if you can - I haven't had a bank statement in over two years, for instance.

Blather blather blather. We're in Dublin and surrounding areas 13 - 19 October, PM me and we could meet up (in Mulligan's, I suspect).
