Waitin' on the residence permit. Anyone recently get theirs?

Post by khu » Fri Sep 24, 2004 11:16 am

Did anyone here just recently get their residence permit permit? I applied in early June and am still waiting. They haven't called or emailed me, so I assume this means they had no serious questions for me. Just wondering if the new procedures have affected waiting times for either better or worse. :?:

I would hazard a guess and say around 6 weeks is normal waiting time. Perhaps give them a call and politely ask for a status update?

I tried about a month ago. I'm pretty polite, but the lady on the phone at the LA consulate was quite admant and curt: The application was in Finland, and they would call me when they knew something. Everything else was no, no, no.

I suppose the only way to get a status update is to actually contact the Finnish side, and the consulate doesn't seem to keen to have idiot ulkomaalaiset nosing around.

I had hoped to get the permit in, like you said, a few weeks, but that came and went, and so I won't be seeing a summer in Finland until next year! Was just wondering if anyone had recently gone through the process completely and could give a point of datum as to how long theirs took.

Thanks for the pointer. In my case I didnt have any employers on my side, I suppose, and I guess that would help expedite things. But the nature of my work (freelance, contract based, telecommuting) is such that it wouldn't help me any.

If the application is in Finland then it should be because you based it on 'family ties'. Is that the reason? If that's the case then start making noise.

I applied for my permanent status on the 17th of this month and received it yesterday on the 24th, but that was in Finland. When I applied for my first one in Canada it took four weeks, but that took a lot of pushing from Lotta with the office here in Helsinki. Don’t deal with the LA they are just the middle man. they have helped me in that office with things before but but there hands are tied most of the time since it has to go thru Finland. Have your girl friend call the office here.

I applied so I could stay with my girlfriend for the next few months until about April of next year. We have been together more than two years, but since she's in school and my work is freelance and telecommuting, I've racked up about a year in the past 2 years visiting her in Finland and a few months in Germany where she was on exchange. She'a also stayed with me in the States for two consecutive summers.

That's more than you cared to know :D But it was on that basis and my savings (around $10,000 US) that I felt like I wouldnt have any problems securing a permit.

The other issue was the nature of my work and the uncertainty of income -- I had no real way to guess what contracts I would have later in the year, etc, so I just used my savings as my proof of economic security, and didn't list any income. I wonder now if that was a dumb move.

I think I'll try to wrangle some contact info from the LA office...The people we'd want to talk to in Finland would be UVI, right? My girlfriend's mom has been quite anxious on my behalf, apparently. Perhaps I can get her to call them up and use a few bad words for my cause.

Thanks, Sayx and Frank for your advice! :D I've gotten a bit distressed with the wait so far.

Mine took Four week

Post by greenhorn » Sun Sep 26, 2004 4:58 pm

I applied for residency permit from New Delhi Embassy and got it exactly on the fourth week.Actually mine was sponsored by the firm i work for and the branch of the firm there at Helsinki was following it up from there so i guess it always helps if someone is following it up from there(Finland).

My girlfriend gave UVI a call -- the clerk there said that he expected a positive decison soon and that the permit would be in LA next week -- here's to hoping he wasn't just stringing us along.

Holy Communion, that's a long time! I'm really hoping the guy told the truth and it's coming this week, because I couldnt take another two months of waiting.

My first and second residence permits took only a couple of weeks. The first one expired by a month or two though. I got a serious talking to. I only noticed cos Kela pointed out I hadnt actually permission to live in the country anymore. I bet that must have made somebodies day at Kela. 6 months sounds a bit excessive. Is it like that for all NonEU applicants?
