Ballet Training
Ballet Training
We will be in Espoo next year (2005-2006 academic year), in Otaniemi. My daughter, who will be 12, is very passionate about her ballet classes. We are looking for a good quality ballet school. In the U.S. she studies in a Royal Academy of Dance Program. This curriculum seems to be used all over the world except in Finland! Someone told me that in Finladf the method usually used is a Russian method called Vaganova. I don't even know where to start looking and my daughter thinks her life will be ruined if she can't continue her ballet!
If you have a child enrolled in a good ballet school, could you let me know about it and how to contact it? We don't mind going into Helsinki if necessary. Thanks!

Thank you all so much for the names and web sites of dance schools! I have e-mailed the ones you posted and tried to decipher some information from their web-sites (with no real understanding of Finnish!)

Ballet training
has anybody had experience with the Ooppera ballet school? I had the impression that it is an all day school that combines academics and dance. Also, I thought it might be very very competitive (5000 applicants, 50 accepted). Does anyone know a family whose child attends the school? I didn't have much luck when I tried to contact them by e-mail, and I guess I'm a bit intimidated to call them, given my complete inability to speak Finnish!
The opera ballet school is not the place to dance for a hobby. It is an institution for kids who are seriously trying to become professional dancers. Admission is by entrance exam and the competition is tough. If your daughter is 12 already then she would be joining other students who will probably have been studying there already 4 years maybe even 7 years if they were in the youngest class. It would probably be a good idea for your daughter to go to a regular dancing school and if she's thinking of training seriously then apply for an entrance exam to SKO ballet school.

Re: Ballet Training
I recommend the School of Finnish National Opera for a seriously ballet studies, as I have been a ballet dancers for years.
If your kid is around 6 to 14 years old it´s great, because of the new direction of the school, so the kids have been oriented correctly and have a very good base on ballet technic.
