academy & moving question..

Post by soothing_rain » Wed Feb 23, 2005 2:53 pm

hello everyone!

8)

I want to go study in the sibelius music academy next year..
I've read many posts here and got very discouraged!
it seems that residence permit is so much harder to get than
I belived...

My question is how can I make it easier on myself?
should I first get accapted to the academy (in hope that I will..)
and than , as a student, apply for a residence permit?
or the other way around?

are there any other necessary documents that I should know of?

I'm sorry it was so long.. :p
any help would be appriciated!
thanks

Questions first..
1: Have you been in contact yet with the Academy?
http://www.siba.fi/eng/
It is an International School/University and they are geared up to help international students.
2. Where are you..e.g. Are you an EU citizen?
3. How good are your chances of being accepted at the academy, because standards are VERY high.? Your own music teacher can probably advise you as the Academy will need her/his references/reports for your self.

Thank you!

yes, I'm a EU citizen,
but I've kept contact with the academy and they gladly accept
students from all over the world.. so it's not a problem there :)

I know they have very..very high standarts there,
but I think I'm gifted in music.. and I study hard as hell!

consulting with my teacher sounds like a good idea.. :)

The residence permit won't be hard to get if you get a place at the academy, I think. It's a perfectly legit reason for a permit, so I suggest you start doing your scales and get ready for the audition! :D

Accualy, being a citizen of an EU member state almost guarantees you the right move here, even without a job, places in education & so on. You might just find you can't claim must in the way of benefits and so on. But IIRC, you can claim the most basic unemployment money, about EUR23 a day for 6 months. I sure someone here can dig out the necessary laws (Hank?)

Unless you have a shadey past (convicted drug runner, pimp, serial killer, etc) you can litterally just waltz in.

thanks everyone..

that was very comforting to learn:)

and about the shady past.. well... what the finnish goverment doesn't know
can't hurt them ;)
lol..just kidding. No bodies are scattered behind my footsteps..

and another question..
I want my b/f to join me .. he's not a EU citizen, and he doesn't
wish to study in finland , at least not now.
what are his chances?
and what can we do to make them better? (coz I know it doesn't sound
very promising)...

thanks again!
you are all wonderful

Now that we know what he isnt / doesnt want to to, WHAT is he (jobwise) and what does he want to do?
Here in Finland, I have done everything I can to blend-in with the Finns, I've changed my hair color, wore differnet clothes, got different

For your boyfriend, he probably just needs to show that he has enough money to stay for however long he needs to stay, and let them know that you are in a relationship with him. In Finland if you can prove you've shared a residence for a while (something like two years) you can be considered to have a common law marriage and that would make it easier for him to get a permit as well.

What instrument(s) do you play, by the way?

As a student on an finnish institution you are getting the permit if you can prove you have enough money to live here. So if you have somehow an income or savings which are more than 500 Euro / month. You can just apply, hand in somee pic's and the fee and will get it.
.... trying to find my way out of here.

How far in his studies is he as you said he is studying?
Maybe finishing the degree in Finland would be an option.

Ok, EU citizens need an excuse to stay in the country so they are registered as residents. That is registered - not applied. To get registered as a resident you need to have an excuse - an excuse is getting approved to the Sibelius academy so that isn't a "problem". The "I want to study" is not on the excuse list. The " I am studying at" is. Sibelius guide for foreign applicants http://www2.siba.fi/opinnot/valinnat2004/eng2004.pdf
and the student guide
http://www.siba.fi/eng/studies/guide04.pdf
explain a lot of the process so read them.

And theres going to be application documents on their pages within a fortnight I suppose as the deadline for applications is the 15th of March. Or maybe you ought to email them?

OK - so the non-EU boyfriend - you have to come up with some excuse for him. Studying - student exchange - something like that is the easiest. "Sit around and do nothing while you play on the piano" is on the list of options but you should be able to show you can support him. Now not on the list of options in that case is "finding work" as you may not work if you are supported... For a work-related residence you have to have the work before you can apply for a work permit - as bizarre it sounds. Otherwise then again if you two were married... but thats a different path as then he'd be a "spouse of an EU citizen" which is a different thing alltogether. Check http://www.uvi.fi and remember the EU non-EU - its like night and day.

An Good luck, they take about 12-16% of the applicants in each year.
Cheers, Hank W.

he is about to begin his first year in univesity.
I thought that it would be great if he could finish the dagree in finland..
But I don't know how the universities in finland work in this area - so that needs checking which I will do!

lol..
well.. go fishing sounds lovely.. ;)
as long as the fish go free in the end, ofcourse.

thank you so much for this full of attantion reply!

I have read the guide before, and will come back to do it again.

as for the deadline i'm going to apply next year.. that is - march 2006!
so I have this off my mind for a little while.

about my b/f, it's not problem - I can sign that I'm able to support him.
but as 'pierrot' mentioned, he might continue his dagree in finland
if it's possible, and than he can also apply as a student.

Oh and marriage...
I wouldn't want to get married for this reason.
sure, it might be of great help... but I'm not sure it's why I want
to meet my beloved at the altar.. ;)

and it's very weird...
how is it possible to have a job before you own a work permit?
I'll never understand those law things!

and thank you again for everything :)
