Aviation jobs in finland

Hey,
I'm a Canadian citizen who also happens to have Finnish citzenship. I currently studying aviation in Canada to get my commericial pilots license. I was just curious if anyone might know about the aviation industry in Finland, particulary in regards to obtaining a job as a pilot. Is a person required to take their training in Finland if they are to be considered for a position, or can a person who received their training elsewhere (Canada) still qualify for the limited number of positions that might be out there?

Hi.
Do you speak fluent Finnish? If not then your chances are not very good, Sorry.

As a newly qualified pilot you would be expected to start your career flying local internal flights, and apart from the international airports it is normal to use the local langauge for locally registered aircraft and only speak english to other nationalities.
Also while some of the legally required paperwork might be in English alot of Finnairs internal paperwork will not be.

You will have a much better chance once you have some experience and can maybe get a job flying international routes.

Isn't it true that Finnair takes all its pilots from the Finnish Air Force??? Maybe you could sign up for a stint in the Finnish military forces??????

No. When I did my flight training in the UK we had a couple of guys being trained for Finnair from scratch.

Shouldn't be a problem. Once you have your ATPL and CPL, the only additional training you'll need is for the type of planes you'll be flying. That is using done when you start work and is paid for by the airline. Check with the Finnish Flight Safety Authority though.

Finnish is not a requirement either. Only cabin crew are required to speak Finnish. All the paper work and communication for commercial pilots is in English.

Right now work in the industry in scarce. Finnair for example aren't taking any new pilots or trainees for a while. Most pilots in Finland start out in smaller airlines before moving to Finnair. You'll find quite a few foreign pilots here.

For aviation jobs, as well as maritime time jobs, you must speak fluent Finnish, Swedish and English.

That's strange because I've met several commercial pilots employed by Finnish airlines that don't speak a word of Finnish or Swedish. All of them fly domestic routes.

Hmm, spooky, but I was going by the job ads...

Maybe now that the Finnish ATC operates in English primarily, but nearly always has done on request anyway, maybe then if one of either the pilot or copilot speaks Finnish & Swedish, then other need not - but one ought to, as they always give the flight info in all three languages.
That probably explains why quite sometimes I hear "This is the copilot speaking ..." rather than the pilot.

Nah the pilot probably just has a hangover and can't be arsed doing it.

I checked and neither of them are required to speak Finnish. It's only the cabin crew that need to. Of course cabin crew need to speak English as that's the language they'd use to communicate with the pilots.

Hopefully flygirl will post if they find out more.

The most interesting, seeing-beyond-your-nose internet sites I can find are usually from Americans.
