considering moving to finland

Post by mumboman » Tue May 31, 2005 9:51 pm

Hi, I've been offered a position in Kuopio, salary of about 2300 euro, and a free apt. The weather is not an issue as I live in Northern North America, so I am used to the -30 and no sun in winter. Will I be fairly comfortable on the salary? I'm single, and have no one to support. Anyone have any answers

Will you be living alone or do you have a family to support?

Do you plan on maintaining a car?

Lucky duck. You'll be fine on that salary. So long as you don't go to all the expensive bars every night.

Good deal especially with that free apartment (which should free up another 30% at least of your after-tax income). Come on over (unless you have a better offer).

The beginning looks good. Now the only question is will you like Kuopio and Finland which is the hardest question. If you want to try something new I would come here :P

Good deal you've got there. Free apartment and all.

Remember that the apartment isn't really "free". In Finland, it's considered taxable income and will raise your overall tax rate. Thus, your base salary will be eaten away at a much quicker rate.

Dusty-bin... pleeease. Don't scare people away from Kuopio. How do you know what day of the week the picture was taken? Even Helsinki has scenes of empty market squares. Kuopio is actually a very nice town.

I don't know what day the picture was taken. Sadly there is no irony emoticon and some are better than others at detecting its absence.

I sincerely doubt that inyone is going to make a decision about changing country based upon a comment made in respect of a single photograph. For the concerned there used to be a webcam of this area. A friend of mine who escaped from Kuopio used to use it to show us just how desolate the place was. I can not find the URL right now though, sorry.

Dusty-bin, I seriously don't think a person would actually make a decision on the basis of a single pic. But then again, you never know. I can't find the webcam of the tori either. They must have removed it :D .
All they have on the Kuopio web-pages concerning webcams is this one unchanging picture of the skijumping thingys and forests, which so much as it is a part of Kuopio, it sadly doesn't really do the town justice http://weathercam.pspt.fi/still.html
