How much land do you have to own? The clubs here are pretty high as well, something like $2k to get in and $1k a year

BTW if you are imagining of bringing any shooting weapons over, expect to be treated as Charlie Manson by the customs & police.

I sent e-mail to the Tampere police and asked what was necessary to bring them, their reply was cut and paste from the web site, so it didn't really clarify anything. It appears I have to get an import permit that is good for 90 days, then when the guns arrive I have to apply for a possesion permit. Does that sound right?

Just thought I would add my 2 cents. I moved from San Diego to Tampere in November. If its been more than 6 months since your bought your car, consider getting atleast one if not both. As part of your removal goods you will not be taxed.

Yes: gas is expensive and so is upkeep of the car.
Yes: public transport is pretty good (but only on weekdays)
Yes: parking is expensive too!

But it takes getting used to taking buses, keeping track of the timetables and planning schedules around them. I found out I am not good at that, so I was relieved when my car finally arrived. Also, since you are a family of four I think it might be more convenient in the long run.

The questions you want to ask are:

• 1. Will the wife be working? If so, you might be able to afford two cars. If not, I would highly doubt you affording two cars at Sr. Engineer salaries.
  2. How much modifications will be required to get your car roadworthy here? My VW Passat cost me about 1000 euros in modifications even though it is European manufactured.

Also, listen to Hank's suggestions of getting spare parts in the US. I didnt and the rims cost 500 euros here!

Nokia has a hunting club. But the season is over (and our freezer is full) unless you are into shooting hares and crows.

Wow, I did not know Nokia has a hunting club, is it as expensive as the private clubs? Got any more info on this? I could kill a few bunnies.

I'd think the Nokia hunting club is good for 2 reasons
- you get to go out with the brass
- there is a chance you actually get accepted, i don't think they make a "profit" out of it.

The thing is, you have to join the club, and probably perform a hunting test as well, to get the police to give you a holding permit for the gun... gun meaning a hunting rifle.

PS. "handgun" and "for protection" are not words to even imagine putting in any application. Finland you can't own guns other than for hunting or target prectice or collection purposes. Just in case nobody told you. (that is also the police aren't really cooperative "some gungho cowboy coming over with an arsenal bigger than our military" they think.)

Ask Nokia HR people in Tampere for the company hunting club contact info before you come - easier for someone who knows their stuff to explain the procedures.

Yup, you need a purchase licence and then an export licence. Now as the USA is a "war-going nation" getting an export licence for weapons needs a parliamentary permission... .he he. no, ask the gun shop. they'll know.

I doubt you'd find comparable car for the same money over here even accounting for the above and shipping. Shipping is probably no more than a grand.

Paul, Where can I get shipping for a grand? The best quote I have so far is $4800 US for both cars, that is $2400 each! I would love to do it for less than half of that.

Scare you?

There are few convertibles here, true. However, I think the main reason for that would be the cold weather -- no one wants to die of wind chill induced frostbite during a drive to the McDriveThru.

Maybe they are taxed more here... Would not surprise me in the least.

But they are cool (in more ways than one)....

So I say keep em.

I think the real reason is you would be too cool for Finland.

I don't think you will have winter problems with a CLK, after all, it is not a rag-top. I think you need to examine your BF's motivations. I think he is settling back into Finnish conformity mode. Can you live in a country where you could expect social ostracism because you drive a halfway decent car?

And worse, where your boyfriend will be uncomfortable to be with someone like you? (Someone who is happy to drive such a symbol of conspicuous consumption)
