There was a German guy in my unit who didn't speak much finnish or english. He made it through NCO school, so I guess language issues are not everything. The good thing about the military is that they make sure even the dumbest person learns what he needs to do - I doubt you'd be the slowest person to learn how to do things. A lot depends of course on your unit and what you're trained to become. And like Reiter said, don't think about the sensibility of things done in the army - it'll just make your head hurt.

The daily pay is 3,60€ for the first six months, after that it increases. One important thing to remember is that you can't always choose six months service: if the army decides you'll serve for 12 months, that's what you're going to have to do.

Just look a few old movies and learn the Finnish equivalent of "zu Befehl herr obergefreiter" - "käskystä herra alikersantti" and you'll be just fine.

I am so lucky they've run out of money, I was expecting to be called in this year.

Then again, the sooner you learn how the system works the better, as you'll be able to use some of the holes to your advantage.
